Do you guys use webcams to keep up with friendships or LDR's?

I know there is no substitution for real life, but Im concluding that the look in the webcam gives a better idea of what the person looks like than a pic. Do u find that to be true? (this is regarding virtual friendships/online dating).

A webcam is like a camcorder. It is live and the person sees your every move. I would not use one, especially with some of the stories I have heard that some folks have used it for.
If someone is asking you to get one, I would question their intent?
Just my 2 cents

Yeah, well there are some pretty big perverts out there with the webcams. I just hope that McCain Palin gets elected this year so that some more conservative justices get put on the bench so we can start STOMPPIN' these little fairy wierdos and their webcams.

But as far as if you should get one or not, well, is your husband active duty? Maybe he wants to see "more" of you sometimes, and I don't see that is a problem. But if some wierdo from craigslist now wants to send you a webcam for no reason, I would quote him Psalm 64:7 and tell him to get LOST!!!!!!

haha! Awesome. I just had to go looking for Psalms 64:7
" But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be struck down."

:) and I read all of 64. Thanks. I started laughing just imagining arrows shooting out everywhere and the guy RUNNING.

No, no...and NO!

They are a bad idea. Unless you're going to be strictly talking with your parents or an immediate family member with them, they are a disaster waiting to happen.

Errr.

They are not bad within themselves. It's all in the matter of how you use them.

I would not put anything on the internet that you do not want the whole world watching. There is no such thing as privacy online.

Webcams can be a great tool in getting to know the other person. Pictures say much, but to see their facial reactions in candid time can be tremendously help in that process.

I used to when meeting people online, but don't really anymore. They're more trouble than they're worth. Usually the connection isn't that great, and the video is choppy. And mostly what you see is them staring at their computer screen and typing... that is, after you've goofed around with funny faces and so forth for a while.

One year for Christmas, we set up a webcam link between my family in Minnesota and us in Ontario while we opened gifts. It was nice, but not ideal by any stretch.

As for revealing things on a webcam to your spouse, I agree with another poster - NO WAY. No web transmissions are secure except encrypted ones!

I think that webcams have their place in a friendship or LDR, but I don't think anything should be done on them that you wouldn't do in public.

I got a really nice webcam on sale at best buy. The quality is pretty good. My internet connection is pretty much amazing so I haven't had many problems (except when yahoo decides to go wonky....)

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done the goofy faces thing.

I was talking to someone long distance. We really fell for each other and after meeting considered getting married even. Since we were so distant that web cam meant the world to me. I would be having a tough day at work and she would pop in for a minute via web cam. Made my day!!!
There was nothing inappropriate, sure that potiential is there, but it is so wonderful to see a persons expressions as you talk to them online. To say something cute and see the smile on their face.
Quality of camera makes all the difference, the lower quality cams look ok but will not give you a sharp image and will not be as fluid as a better one. The color and overal appearance as well as avaliable settings is just so much better for $30- $40 more. Mine cost about $70 and I am very pleased with it. I have seen some costing much more.

I never used them for dating..but they are great when you have a family member in the Military and/or grandchildren many miles away. You get what you pay for..so opt for the one which may cost a few bucks more but gives a sharper image.

OK. So, I did try the webcam. I couldnt be seen, but I can see the person on the other end. It was very fun. This is someone I met on a Christian dating site. I see the point in how it can be dangerous. After a couple days of playing with this and being platonic, he stepped it up a zillion notches and asked if I wanted to see him naked ...
Really CRAZY ... he also proposed ... I feel partly to blame. but I guess as people get comfortable, they become THEMSELVES and the hidden things are revealed.

I wont say no to the webcam. Im saying no to that person. My question here is answered! So much for meeting people on Christian websites

My brother got one for my parents for Christmas last year. They live about 12 hours away and have 1 son. THey also have one so they can call my parents on it and they (we) can see my nephew and he can see us and remember who we are (he's almost 3). The kids love it.

Why in the world do you feel partly to blame? Did you lead him into the conversation topic? Did you shamelessly flirt with him

(You don't have to answer, as it's not really on topic, but I don't understand why you'd feel partly to blame for his inappropriate actions.)

We don't own a webcam, yet - my mom has said she'll buy us one for Christmas to help with the distance (Japan and US). My husband and I had a long distance relationship for nearly two years and although I had suggested buying webcams periodically, we never did. Occasionally, I'll view my sister's webcam, though it's not the best quality, i.e. very choppy and grainy. I think they're a good idea though for anyone who is able and willing to use them as they are as good of a substitute for real life as you can get! Just make sure it's high-quality.

when my daughter was younger, we'd use the webcam once in a while while IM'ing with an out of state grandmother so she could see our daughter playing, etc. i think we also tried it one Christmas too when opening presents from that same person.

the logitech quick cam pro 9000 is a great model. it retails for $100 but if you shop around can find it cheaper ($70 at circuit city this week, $80 at best buy last week, amazon the week before, etc). they have a laptop model of it too (but this one fits laptops better lol). installation was very easy and adjusts for lighting great. i had an older model from several years ago and it was very choppy and grainy like you said but this new one rocks! microsoft's lifecam VX series got good reviews and are a bit cheaper and my friend has a creative that works really well.
