"A belief is something you'll argue about. But
a conviction is something you'll die for." ~Howard Hendricks

I saw this sig just now and it made me think about something I came across awhile back. One of my lines of ancestors is heavily anabaptist. And farther back in that line one of my ancestors was a christian martyr. Just knowing that sometimes freaks me out. I don't know - could I do that - it scares me to think about the answers that come to mind.

What do you think about it?

The only way we'll ever be sure is when we're thrust into that opportunity however the level of my obedience and vulnerability to a cause greater then myself is good training for martyrdom.

Once when I was a new Christian I said to a friend that I didn't have the courage or faith to be tortured or killed for Christ, she replied that I didn't the it now because I don't need it but I could believe that if I needed it God would provide it.
I've always remembered her telling me that.

Well, I don't know Howard, but there are millions of Christians who have died for a belief. Paul believed Christ was the way and he died for it. So I question the quote.

There are people in this world dying because of their Christianity right now.

Let us pray for them; and pray that God does not put us to a similar test.

I am more concerned with Christ living in and through me in this life.

It would be just my luck to martyr myself...and no one would notice.

Peace

God is not going to give you the grace for something today which may never even happen tomorrow so please stop wasting your time worrying about it.

In my mother's ancestral lineage is Dr David Livingstone; however, I don't think God is going to call me to do exploits such as he did and if He does, then He will give me the grace only as and when it is needed and not a moment too soon.

It is not a worry - just something i think about now and then. The quote reminded me of my geneology history. Sort of a pondering the circumstances. And I don't think pondering is a waste of time. Sort of along the lines of the premise of the books A Skeleton in God's Closet and More than a Skeleton. And as far as thinking I could do stuff like my ancestors - i am very realistic - there is a lot of things my ancestors did that I don't think I could do. One of ancestors had 17 children, I don't think I could do that.

quote:

she replied that I didn't the it now because I don't need it but I could believe that if I needed it God would provide it.

That is a beautiful way to put it. Thank you.

that is so important. I try to keep up with the following group. Sometimes it is hard to read about what is happening - but it is important to read and pray.
The Voice of the Martyrs http://www.persecution.net/

definitions :
belief The mental act, condition, or habit of placing trust or confidence in another:
conviction A fixed or strong belief. a firmly held belief

I think that idea of belief vs conviction has alot to do with the signature line that I use. I more or less use it as a sig to always remind myself that if i really believe what i believe then it will affect my actions.

In terms of end-times, I lean towards amilenialism but I am not willing to die for that belief. However, for the certainty of His return, I am willing to go to the stake.

There are certain things/tenets that I must be willing to die for, things like Jesus being God, salvation through Christ alone, etc. You know the phrase, "I'd stake my life on it"? Well, I guess that is what we do with our faith every day!
