ORIGINAL: NiceGuy [font="Verdana]The GIMP for photo editing. Whats this?? I want to get something like Photoshop but dont know what to buy or download!! Here is the URL for The Gimp, FREE image manipulation software. Heard lots of good stuff about it: http://www.gimp.org/ I use Paint Shop Pro....which is very inexpensive compared to Photoshop, and just as good for most uses, in my opinion. It's around $100, I think, but older versions can be had off eBay farily cheap. The newest version is #9, but version 7 is still quite popular. I've used 7, 8, and 9 and liked all three, though for my purposes 9 is the best (I use it for my web designing business as well; if I were just playing around I'd be content with #7.)

Thank you!! I really love photography and taking pictures, but until I invested in my digital set up, I had to be very frugal - and then wait until I could get the film developed. I just love the freedom of a digicam - just erase those babies and use the card over again....and I can see them as soon as I get to my PC. It's SO much fun.

I do have Paint Shop 5 on my computer, my brother in law has 7 or 8, I am not sure which one, it is really neat, I like working with it and have thought about investing in it or just going the extra and getting the paint shop 9.

Hi everyone, What quality files do you use. I picked up from Digicamhelp how digital zoom works (or doesn't work ) and why we shouldn't use it . They sum it up by saying that we should use a higher quality mode and work from there in our editors. I have been using HQ which gives an average file size of 780 KB. I did try SHQ for awhile 1-2 MB file size and will return to it no problem, just a more frequent downloading which is a good idea. Blessings, buddy

***Incoming Message from the Big Giant Head *** I'm not sure what quality I use (hq, shq, etc) right off the top of my head. All I know for sure is that the resolution is 2272x1704 and the size is a little over 2mb per picture. I think that's the highest my camera will go. NiceGuy

It depends on what I'm going to be doing with my pictures. If I know they're going to be enlarged past 4x6, I will go for higher quality...but if they're just going on the computer I use the lower quality, and medium for 4x6 prints.

I mostly use my digital for snapshots. It defaults to HQ, so that's where I leave it. I discovered the drawbacks to the digital zoom when I tried to get some shots of deer in a park. When I viewed the results at full size they were pretty poor quality. For what I consider "critical" work, i.e. shots I'd actually want people to see, I'll stick to my N80 til I can afford the D100X.

Hi everyone, tried out my camera this afternoon using TIFF - no compression available, 2288 x1712 - file size blew out to a mammoth 12MB! + a secondary file of 6KB. Took it using full digital zoom and it was actually ok. However, i'll settle for SHQ in between i reckon. Liked your photos on horses Karen_w

Hi everyone, Spent part of my evening reading an Olympic tutorial on their E-1 slr and got as far as the subject on White Balance. Checked out my little Olympic 770 and discovered I could customise WB on it too. Spent the rest of evening learning what WB and my camera were about. Found that in my nighttime scene (2 different fluoro lights), a better photo could be taken using a customised WB rather than an Auto or Preset setting. Maybe i'll check out ISA settings next Blessings, buddy

Big news....my digital point and shoot died today - so I called dh at work and asked him if I could go get a new camera (being as I have a wedding to shoot on Sat and all and I didn't want to just rely on my 35mm). He said "sure, just get a good one okay - not one of those fully automatic ones".....so.......I spent about half of our savings on a Canon EOS digital Rebel 6mp. NOW, I have to figure it out and feel comfortable with it by Saturday. I'm also feeling a tiny bit of guilt about spending so much, but I figure if I shoot at least 5 weddings that should about cover what I spent. BTW - I love it so far, and I'm going to the botanical gardens here on Fri, so I can play with it some more there.

That's GREAT!!! Let me know how you like it!! I love my Canon Rebel EOS 35mm...even though I never use it anymore, I can't bear to part with it. I wonder if anyone feels that way about their old 110? Was there ever a worse camera?

My sister absolutely loves her EOS digital. I don't think she's touched her 35mm since she got it. I played around a little with it, but not enough to form an opinion. Hmmmm, I'm going down there in July, maybe I'll get to play soem more! Beckey, have fun at the gardens. Flowers are one of my favorite things to shoot, expecially with my 6x closeup filter in front of my 200mm zoom. I need a set of focusing rails. I lost 2 auctions on ebay last week.

Seems like this camera has endless possiblilities My N80 is like that. Menus within menus. Hold this button, turn this knob and poof it self destructs! Well maybe not that extreme, but there are enough options that after four years I still don't know them all. The manual is over a hunderd pages long!

I think I'm just gonna be using the dummy settings for the wedding this weekend...maybe use the portrait mode....but I'll probably keep it on fully automatic. If I want to get fancier than that, I can edit the photos afterward.

Did you try going thru My Computer? On my computer, My Computer shows the camera as drive G (I have a DVD drive which is E and a CD Rom drive which is F) Also...is your camera actually turned on and turned to the mode to just "playback" pictures? My computer won't recognize the camera unless it's in playback-only mode.

Hi all Just checked out your photos at the Botanical Gardens, BeckeyZ. That was a great depth of field (no. 58 I think - 2 children and the towers). With regard to the sky colouring, have you explored the White Balance settings yet? I found on mine (an Olympus) that Auto was not always the best - particularly when the balance falls somewhere between 2 presets then it is a custom job. quote:
AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! Goodness Landibee, I hope you had a soft - well ... "land"ing there When I connect mine, I get a chime like sound and a green arrow type thingo appears in my system tray (microsoft Disconnect thingo). If something like this happens with yours, go to Explorer and the highest drive letter you can find (x:). You may have a couple of folders to navigate through as well. If Explorer/My Computer was already running, you will need to press F5 a couple of times to refresh it (make sure the particular program is also active as well). You may like try it out on someone else's computer also. Hope it helps, Buddy
