Yep, makes sense.

I think that most people realize where their limitations are. I don't think most people who stink at singing enjoy singing, to use your example. Sure, there are some deluded folks, and they often end up in the church choir. But regarding the spiritual gifts (prophecy, teaching, serving, encouragement, mercy, etc.), I think God gives us a desire to act within our own giftedness. Now, if we're being rebellious, I suppose this isn't the case.

My 2 main areas are teaching and leadership, but I believe God also gives us some gifts at various stages of our life.

For instance there has been times in my life when I could sit and write page after page, day after day, week after week, and the words flowed faster than I could write them, but then there are periods where I go months on end without writing one article, poem, or chapter.....

Well, I found my 'talent' when God laid upon my heart to start writing. That was 10 years ago. I wrote one novel, it was baaaddddddddddd. (you'd poke out your own eyes if you read it. ) Then God began to lead me to writing stuff and I learned how to write. I was thinking today how when we do hand those talents over to God, He will make sure they grow. He did with mine. In fact, just this last year, a friend of mine encouraged me to attend Karitos in Chicago Illinois. They had a discount price for writers, so I went. I sat under the teachings of Patty Hickman, an award winning Christian writer. Her teachings changed my writing forever. Now it's a whole lot better. But as I look back over the last few years, I see God leading me and building up my talent. But the most important thing is to give it to God and allow Him to 'make it grow'. If you try to make it grow yourself, you'll get a human version of God's talents. But if you let God take control, lead you, guide you, teach you, allow Him to 'connect the dots', then you'll have miracles.

How do you find your talents? Well, ask Him. What do you want me to do? A servant asks the Master what to do. The servant doesn't run around doing stuff he thinks he wants to do or what he thinks the Master wants him to do. If you ask God, He'll show you want to do.

I remember a minister saying that it is good to seek the advice of older, mature Christians and ask them for an honest opinion regarding what they observe as being your talents.

What does anyone else think? How do we find out what our gifts / talents are? How do YOU know what your talents are as a certainty?

My desire is to exhort / encourage my brethren. I love to encourage my brethren in the Lord.

Yeap, yeap. yeap. He will always answer His children. Remember when you were a little Little 1 and you'd ask mom what she wanted you to do in regards to cleaning the house? She's say, do the dishes or vacuum or something. IT's the same with God. Ask Dad what He wants you to do.

What are you going to do when the answer to the question you asked is given?
What are you going to do when you find what you are seeking?
What are you going to do when he opens the door?
All of the above can only have the same answer and that is," to do", with what is revealed, whether it's in direction that you do not agree with or not. All of the response's require us to apply it to our lives, application to walk in his foot steps.

There's a saying that: "He will never lead us where His grace cannot keep us" and this is true of our gifts if we willingly use them in His service.

When I was very young my careers teacher at school asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I said I wanted to be a brain-surgeon, or an astronaut.

He looked at me and could not stop laughing out loud.

That's when I discovered my talent at making people laugh !!!!

Being a girl ( ) I wanted to be 'out of this world' and God gave me my wish:

1 Peter 2:11
Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.

1 Corinthians 12-14
Romans 12
Ephesians 4

Each of the above passages speaks of spiritual gifts.

Every Christian has been given a spiritual gift(s) to use in the edification and building up of the church. We are each responsible to use this gift wisely and to the best of our ability so that when Jesus comes back (or we are called home first) we will not be found to have been unfaithful and wicked servants. Matthew 25: 14-28

What is your gift and how is it being used to edify and build the church?

Here is a great link to discover the gifts: Spiritual gifts

Greetings,

quote:

What is your gift and how is it being used to edify and build the church?

Example

you mentioned
Every Christian has been given a spiritual gift(s) to use in the edification and building up of the church and gave the verses above; which in general has not too much to do with the unfaithful and wicked servant thing.

So what do we actually want to glean from that?
I am asking …By reason
……..Using the parable in Matt 25 as the reference point really has nothing to do with the verses you gave concerning spiritual gifts: it is a totally opposite direction.

The parable in Matt 25 and the wicked “and” lazy servant, wicked is a servant who never possessed spiritual gifts in the first place because of his own ability; and lazy because that servant did not ask his masters will; but professed to know it,

Whereby a better reference would have been found in Matt 24:45 as a continuance to those 2 servants, who received the increase in Matt 25, or as those who do possess gifts ….whereby the gifts of God are without repentance,
if the good and faithful begins to question the Lords coming; and was abusing the gifts; the Lord called that evil; whereby the gifts are without repentance so it was shown that what we reap sow.

I am sure which direction you want to go… or are both open?

In my Bible it says that the servant in Matt 25: 14-28 did receive a talent (gift) but only one and he didn't use it at all and so it was taken off him and given to someone else.

I'm not sure I understand what you are meaning here. Please could you explain?

Whilst I may not agree with you concerning the wicked servant never having been given a gift by God in the first place LG - you have made a very good point where you say that he was lazy because he did not ask his master's will; but rather professed to know it! Thank you. L1
