We actually *gasp* have done sleep training with Gabby, but it did not involve ANY "needy" crying... only anger,

LOL...us too.....we waited til they were old enough to understand though, we don't do it with babies because they just didn't seem to understand. I don't do much by age...I do it all mostly by ability/understanding. Some of mine were ready much earlier then others. Jack for instance....the month before he turned two Justice was born. We had been trying to get a night time routine for about six months...but it was just not working. So instead we did CC for nap time...and by two weeks after that he was on a very different sleep schedule so we could do the night time schedule with him. Now, just 3 months after starting the night time stuff, he is a pro!!!! It has worked out perfectly for him!!!

I do think one of the issues I see some AP moms having is the feeling that they can't ever let their child cry or have "bad" feelings (Thus the whole "consensual living" idea and never saying 'No' in some cases). I have run across some moms who are total martyrs to AP.

I have seen that too Maggie...sad really. We simply can't put so much stock and power in our kids hands....it's ill-placed if it's there and that leads to all sorts of problems!!! Our personal being needs to be securely founded in Christ, not in others or ideas of this world.

We go back and forth on spanking,

Me too. I tried spanking for a time but it did not work so I am back to sitting down until Jessica calms down.

See, I don't think Gabby is old enough to grasp spanking. We have tried smacking her hand and she just laughs, but I also don't think she's old enough for time outs yet. She is super strong willed and defiant on purpose but I don't know how to correct it

yeah, ours at that age didn't grasp it...not til about 18-24 months, or whenever they actually start caring and showing that they care about your reaction to things. Until then we used diversion and moving them as our main tactics (and of course either moving it out of their reach or not caring if they got to it).

I am working on diversion and moving things, but I can only move so much, ya know? Oh well, I guess we will just continue doing what we are doing and wait until she is a bit older to start really disciplining.

I love many parts of AP. The only parts that I do not do is the non punitive parenting. I have read posts of moms who were crying becuase their 2 year old would not stop kicking then no matter how many times they tried to tell them that it is not nice to kick mommy, it hurts my feelings. Some do not believe in any discipline at all they think it is harmful to even do time out. I do.

Yeah, I don't always agree with that part either. Gabby is a hitter, we usually tell her "don't hit, it hurts. We use gentle touch" and then show her to pat or stroke our face(which is what she is usually hitting). Her hitting isn't usually malicious though, it seems to be more out of frustration.

Hitting for hitting never seemed to make sense to me, at least when they are very little. A stern don't hit always seem to work.

Maybe it's just different for different kids. Though first of all we don't "hit". We spank. Hitting is what they children are doing when they lash out angrily in order to hurt someone else. They never seemed to have trouble grasping that a calmly applied spanking was a just and reasonable punishment for hurting someone.
