No, I tune it the standard way. But if I was to tune it 3 keys higher, my top string would snap.

Dude...change your strings. Old strings tend to not intonate properly. Six months seems like a long time to keep strings on a guitar, but the frequency which you change them really depends on how often you play. Strings are cheap and easy to change and a fresh set can bring a guitar to life. I try to change mine about once a month, but if I break one (it would be either the high E or B strings), I'll replace the whole set; if it happens at a gig (church), I'll replace just the broken string with the exact same gauge and leave the others on until I get home.

Ok, so my question would be 'why would you tune it "3 keys higher"?'
It's only natural, given the limitations of metal that's being stretched, that as you tune higher the potential for breakage increases.

Yeah, I'm just saying that if it snaps at only three half-tones higher, doesn't that give you an idea of how tight it is now?

From what you've said, I'd wonder whether either your new E string is of a thisker gauge than the old one, or else it's the wrong string, and you've put a B-string on instead. They can be mis-labelled.

i have an ibanez bass and an alverez 5 string bass. the ibanez is my mainstay , but the alverez has the thunder, plus my peavy rig and my new effects processor. my band is looking for a guitar player and singer.

It's an accoustic. The string was a .013, but the next smallest string in the pack was a .017, so I assumed that the .013 was the E string.

You will warp the neck and may even damage the mount to the body. Most guitars are just not made to handle that amount of tension.

.013 is a normal gage E string for a medium set. Those are louder than lights but the tension can be bad for most guitars.
Normal meduim gage is (in thousanths of an inch) 13-17-26-35-45-56 with light gage being 12-16-24-32-42-53. Sets that start with 11 thousanths are also called light. Extra light start at 10. These are gages for acoustic guitars, the electric sets are all lighter.

Good info.
I use .011 to .052 on my acoustic and .011 to .049 on my electrics. This keeps the basic feel from one to another similar enough so that I don't have to adapt finger pressure and tension when playing one to another.

.013" is 13 thousandths of an inch.
.13" is 13 hundredths of an inch.
Guitar strings are almost always measured in thousandths (non-metric).

How often should they changed?
That depends on how much you play and what kind of condition you keep the guitar in.
When I used to gig regularly I would change my strings every 3 shows, getting a total of about 15 hours of playing out of them.
I NEVER broke a string live during that time.
These days I change them every couple months but that's because I have 3 main guitars and I split my performance time between the 3.
Honestly, 6 months is about all you really should let the strings go for before changing them IF you're not playing that much and more frequently if you are.
