Good Morning All,

Well I wanted to see how many of you have been die-hard book readers and who were "guided" by someone they knew to get into reading. My Story begins in 1992 my Freshman year of high school.

I was failing English as I had no interest at all for reading or plays or anything like that, so I just basically said, "I don't need this reading stuff." i proceeded to do the minimum to pass the class and that was it......Until my second quarter of the year when I changed teachers. I was assigned to Mr. Walmsley's class on English Literature and Exploratory reading. I was upset to say the least. Well after the first week, Mr. Walmsley could tell I didn't care at all to be in his class. (I was respectful and didn't act up, i just ignored all the material) he pulled me aside after class and called my next class teacher (History, another winner :P) and informed him I would be late.

He asked me why I didn't like to read, I told him it took me forever (
not an exaggeration by my Teenage measurement of time :P) and it was pointless to read books. He smiled and handed me a book to read, my First one, Entitled: Watership Down (have no idea the Author)(Awesome book) He said to read it at my pace then give him a report.

So I did, took me a month to get through it. I gave my report and he handed me: The Count of Monte Cristo (Awesome book), I read it and gave him my report (Took about 3 weeks, yes I was getting faster :P). Then he handed me: Romeo and Juliet (I must have gave him an interesting look because he started laughing). I read it and gave him a report and found i was really liking this reading stuff.

Well come to find out, my Shrewd English Teacher was giving me the Required material for the next Quarter and he knew i had him for English. I finished all the required book as the quarter started and was like, now what? He smiled and told me to write a story, a short story....<shrug>.

Thus began my addiction to reading, It got so bad in class, that he would take away my books during class and give them to me after with a smile. I was reading the Shannara series by Terry Brooks.

Yes my grads dropped a little as i was reading in my other classes...rofl. i would get home and read and my Dad and Mom would have to take my book away so i would come eat at the table <chuckle>.

Ok, so that is my introduction to reading....whats yours? <smile>

I developed my love for reading after high school and college. It was around 1972 while in the Navy that I began reading for enjoyment. Another sailor left out a paperback novel (one of a series) and I started reading it for something to do. I finished it and 8 others of the series in about as many days. Later, I branched into non-fiction by notable authors like C.S. Lewis. Since then, it's a rare evening that I don't read some to relax before bed.

My mother instilled a love of books in me before I started kindergarten. She was a school teacher and had enough books to start a library at home and in her classroom. She had a lot of old children's books that were beautifully illustrated which caught my eye early on.

It's really hard to pinpoint.

I learned to read early (3-4) and enjoyed it. I loved when my mother took us to the library. I'd take my reading books home just to read all the stories early in the year, but I don't think I was ever an obsessive reader until fourth grade.

I have no idea what set me off. Perhaps because my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Carson, read aloud to us for 20 minutes every morning. Not only that but she told us there was no pressure to listen (we could do homework) as long as we were quiet.

We read the first 3 Chronicles of Narnia, EB White books, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. It was really a magical year. She could barely keep me from reading to do other things. I'd put my desk lid up when I was done with my class work and read behind there until someone stopped me.

It may also be because we were taken regularly to the school library (weekly) by fourth grade as well. We also had 2 bookshelves of classroom books I could read. Before then I just didn't have a regular and reliable means to get books at my level (we didn't have any at home). The younger grades didn't go to the library every week.

I've loved reading ever since I was a young child. I was no prodigy, I started reading at the normal age, but when I started reading I got into bigger books(the classics) faster than most other kids. I still remember my very first chapter book! Since we had no TV, the internet wasn't what it is now, and I had no friends, reading was what I did to occupy my time. It was, and still is my escape. The library was my favourite place in the world (and now I'm blessed to work there!). Often when I did something wrong, my punishment would be to not read for the rest of the day, quite the opposite of most kids today who see reading as an awful punishment!

I really didn't start reading books other than what was required in school until I was a sophomore or junior in high school. I had my wisdom teeth taken out, and I was out of it for several days. My dad just received Tom Clancy's Clear and Present Danger from his Book of the Month club. Since I really couldn't do anything else and it looked interesting, I read it.

I hated reading throughout grade school and going into Junior High. I would select the thinnest of books and then skim a few chapters in order to write required book reports. In the fall of 7th grade, my older sister and her friend were reading "Gone with the Wind" together. They were constantly talking about Rhett and Scarlet. I got jealous. So, I borrowed it from the school library. I still remember that edition had 1037 pages. I borrowed it about 2 weeks before Christmas break and had to renew it. After Christmas break I had to renew it again. It took me about a month to 6 weeks to read and that was with skimming through the civil war details. Of course by the time I finished it my sister and her friend were long done talking about it. When I returned it to the library I borrowed another book. The library became my favorite place. I always had a book to read after that. It was not unusual for me to read a book a day throughout highschool. I spent many classes reading instead of paying attention. Unfortunately, I don't read as much now but I usually have a book in progress.

I've been reading for as long as I can remember. I'm a real bookworm. I don't get to the library as often as I'd like to, but I do make good use of the closest Christian bookstore to us.

as long as I can remember. My mom read to me often, and I can remember being one of the easiest readers in first grade.
I've always loved to read.

Like others here - I developed a love of books and reading as a preschooler - toddler really. I remember vividly when I was 3 or 4 years old my Grandfather pulling me on his lap after breakfast and morning chores were done and reading to me out of the newspaper. I remember Grandma - who babysat me while my parents worked reading to me all the time. I have fond memories of two homes filled with books! My parents and grandparents both always had tons and tons of books available for my reading pleasure! I learned to read early. I don't remember going to the library much as a child, but I do remember Mom taking us kids to the bookmobile or when we were old enough (9 years old or so) riding our bikes the 5 miles to the nearest town where the bookmobile would stop and bring us new and exciting adventures! Now after highschool and so many literature classes in college I kinda took a break for awhile. After reading so much Milton and Shakespeare and others I was just totally wiped out.

And now something from my past has rubbed off on my children! All 4 of them absolutely LOVE a good book!

Blessings,

Garsy

I've always enjoyed reading, but I really got hooked in grade 5. My teacher sent me into the hall all the time and our class was across from an open-concept school library. I would just scoot over grab a book and scoot back. I loved being sent to the hall...not the effect she was hoping for!

I'm another one who did not enjoy reading until later---after high school and college. Oh, I read some Trixie Belden and Cherry Ames but not much and I'm not sure that even counts.

Now I read four/five books at a time and am never without a stack that I'm longing to get to and others I want to reread. Although, in general, I only read at bedtime. Otherwise I'm afraid I wouldn't accomplish much else.

I am very selective about what I read though. I read mostly Christian classics---very few contemporary Christian books. I'm in a book group so I read contemporary fiction for that group. Right now we're reading The Book Thief---but I'm not sure if that's fiction as I haven't started it yet.

Diehard reader.

My parents were big believers in reading to your baby right from the beginning (as am I). My mom says I was reading at the age of 3 and I can remember growing up collecting series and always having to have the next one in the series as soon as it came out. I can't even imagine how much my parents spent on books for me as a child. Through high school and university I lost the love a little bit because I was doing so much reading for school I didn't have time for pleasure reading.

Now, I always have one or two (or more) books going at a time. My daughter and I go to the library once a week and always come home with a full bag. Since she was a year old she has been picking up books and "reading" and it makes me so proud!

My husband has only recently got into reading. He worked for a book publisher in their warehouse and always brought home discarded books. Then he would casually mention a book and I would pick it up for him at the library. THEN, he discovered that the library has graphic novels and next thing I knew we were driving 45 minutes out of town each weekend to go to a few different libraries and take out books!

Like Jimbo, I didn't really get into reading for pleasure until after high school and college. Oh, I kind of flirted with it as a kid, but I wasn't a serious reader at all.

I credit my parents and their friends for giving me a love of reading. My parents were voracious readers and so were their friends. They frequently discussed the ideas or stories in books. They also continually encouraged to read and often read to me when I was a kid -- even into adulthood. But it wasn't until I was out of school and no one required me to read that I actually began to do it on my own. I also married a reader. That helped as well. BTW, he didn't like to read as a kid either, but his parents were also readers. He became a reader when he was in college, so he had a few years on me.

The first book I read though that really got to me and I didn't want to put down was East of Eden. Yeah, it's long but I really got into the characters. I was a freshman in high school when that happened, but it still wasn't enough to make me read avidly. Most of my reading in those days was because I had to. So glad someone made me read some things even when I didn't want to.

Then in my 20s and 30s, I read everything I could get my hands on. I made up for lost time and reread some things I had just read out of fear of not reading them. I've slowed down a bit in my 40s, but I still love to read and preach often to my kids about how important it is. I often tell them that if you can read, you can learn about anything. I also tell them that just because you know how to read words doesn't mean you have the stamina to read a book and really get something out of it. Just like knowing how to run doesn't mean you can run a marathon. You have to practice. I'm the type whose mind would wonder terribly when I was a kid, so I really had to practice concentration. Oh, I understood the words. Vocab was never a problem. I just hadn't developed a good attention span. All of the reading I was made to do helped me with that. Again, I'm so glad I was made to read even when I didn't want to do it.

I remember by big brother reading Swallows and Amazons to me when I was four or five, then he lent me Pirates of Venus when I was about six. That one hooked me.

I wish I had gotten hooked at an early age. Something that must have frustrated my parents is that I could read when I was three years old, and by the time I entered school I was reading on almost a fourth grade level yet I didn't like to read. I've wondered if I actually learned too young and it was such a source of amusement to adults who wanted me to read to them that I got sick of it.

When I was a youngster, I went to the library all the time and started reading The Hardy Boys series. Remember them? My dad had some when he was younger and I still have his collection. These are old books from the 30's and 40's.

When I was 5 or 6 my mom started taking us to the library every other week. I loved it, before long, I had a "favorite" row and would go and sit down on the floor and read any Tasha Tudor books they had.

I guess when I was about 10 yrs old, I read "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn". A big book for a ten year old. It took me the whole summer, but I read the whole thing. It was a wonderful summer.

Well, I got hooked to books shortly after I learned to read. I remember one summer, just before school would start, my 3rd grade teacher came to visit to introduce himself before the year started and I was reading a book while they talked. I remember when I was about 10 or 11, I went to a hypnotist/hypnotherapist to help me with bet wetting problem (for which I received medical treatment, just mentally needed some help). While my mom and he were talking, I was reading my book. Focused on my book, still listening. I had a little break from reading a few years ago, but now hooked again
