I was young, but old enough to remember. One side burning from the centrally located wood stove, and freezing on the side that wasn't facing the stove. LOL. And yes, the Spirit of God moving and people repenting. We had an awesome move this last Sabbath. Hated to leave church. The HS is still the same, people are different. Actually, they're the same. lol. Church has changed with all the seeker friendly politically correctness. But there are some old time churches still kicking.

Thank you for your post.I remember those times too. The church I'm in,the Pastor's fantastick but it is full of fleshly emotions and not Spiritual emotions. It's been so long since I have felt the presents of the HS of God,I need a Spiritual bath.Yes I read my Bible and pray, but oh how I need to be able to leave my church feeling like I have been In the presents of the HS of God.

I think it is completely wrong to make such a blanket statement as "the Holy Spirit is missing from today's church. Fact is that there were churches doing it wrong back in the 50's much the same way there are churches doing it wrong today. There are also good, Bible believing, salvation preaching, Holy Spirit filled churches in today's society, just as there were back then. The fact that we don't "do" church quite the same way now is not necessarily indicative of the Holy Spirit's departure, anymore so than the fact that churches in the 50's bore little resemblance to the churches of the 1890s... quote:
but it is full of fleshly emotions and not Spiritual emotions. Still waiting for a Scripture that explains this concept...and waiting, and waiting...

Tafkam, there Is no such thing as a perfect church.Never was and never will be.To my knowledge,I can't think of any Scripture to discribe the difference between fleshly emotions and Spiritual emotions, but I have felt them both. However that's not what this threads about. So let's get back on the topic.

Sounds like a fleshly emotional experience to me. Church changes over time. We also tend to celebrate the past. I firmly believe that it is posssible for us to change the manner in which we communicate teh message of Christ, but we don't have to change the message itself. There will always be churches that are led by the Holy Spirit, and there will always be churches that go through the motions. Either find a church where you can worship freely, or if you insist on staying where you are, ask for God's guidance in bringing about some measure of change where it needs to be implemented...

ORIGINAL: yustme I want to see people so under conviction they run to the alter for what ever need. i want to see people so convicted they are stopped in their tracks wherever they are, and for the sole purpose of the recognition of G-d's holiness and sovereignty and their sinfulness. the altar is wherever you meet christ. don't make the building or the meeting an idol... quote:

ORIGINAL: yustme This Is what I mean about the way church use to be. i'm not sure that church, or rather, all believers' gatherings, were like that. ever. sometimes, yes. and that still happens today. i've seen it.

So is the issue really about the presence/absence of the HS or is it about worship style? (I have a reason for asking.....and it's not to preach at anyone )

What happens at church to make you feel as though you've been in the presence of God?

How many times have I made o rheard the statement "I didn't get anything out of worship today." Well, my pastor addressed this a few weeks ago from the pulpit when he said "Guess, what? You weren't supposed to!" God is the reason and object for our worship and He's obviously so much bigger than the songs of a particular culture or generation or music from an organ or piano, or how we dress or worship with raised hands or in reserved silence. I listen carefully to the words of "contemporary" worship music, and I find it to be scripturally sound and, frankly, more God-centered than many of our hymns. Today's music seems to be mostly prayer songs...songs directed TO God whereas many hymns are fellowship related or evangellical in nature. I guess I see the shift in music style as being less ABOUT God and more TO God. Does that ring true with you guys as well.

I actually see it true in hymns and P&W. Some are quite biblical and adoring of the Creator, while some are as you say, "Just about God." Many of the P&W are that way to. That's how I determined which is which. Praise is "about God." Worship is "to God." I can see a need for both. So, perhaps we need a balanced mix. Our last service was so energized it was just "to God." This has stemmed from a month of looking at "The Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony." Most took the sabbath school time and the sermon time. That was the case this last week. When we entered into the music, everyone was caught up in the presence of the Lord we just sang and worshiped. The week before, we had no singing. So, if led by the Spirit, services may be the same each week, or radically different. Ours isn't the swinging from the ceiling radical, but just the entire "focus" on the Lord. I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart. Do we have an attitude of thanksgiving on our way to church. I will enter His court with praise. Do we enter the service with praise or thoughts of what's going on around us. I will say this is the day that the Lord has made. Have we truly set this time aside for Him and Him alone? That song includes what we are to do each week. Sure, our lives are a daily thing, but that's another thread.
