What are some of your favorite restaurants that offer a large variety of moderate to very healthy foods? ....I am a Ruby Tuesday fan and love their salads, but I'm not so sure about the healthiness of the normal menu. I love to get Avocado fajitas (with chicken added ...for like $1.50 more or so) and then get the salad bar. It can get expensive though. I also loved a place called Cosi's when I lived in the mid-West for their salads. Something about the preparation that was fabulous. Same quality of lettuces as anywhere else, but the flavoring and dressing was amazing and stood out better than anywhere else.

It should be noted that my lone experience ever going to a vegetarian restaurant was terrible. It was suposedly a healthy and yummy place to eat from my veggie roommate back in college, but it was ridiculously expensive, the food was tasteless, and I was still hungry afterwards. I wonder if these places are acquired tastes? I still am curious to try another one though.

Well if you go to calorieking.com or similar websites you'll find its pretty much an oxymoron at chain restaurants. Salads aren't always healthy either. However I do like the shrimp tacos from baja fresh. Seems to be about the healthiest thing you can get.

Also, I thought Wendy's was the healthiest of all burger chains?

Sorry to say, but no, not all salads are healthy. The veges are great. It's all the other stuff--the meat, cheese, dressing, etc. That's where you can end up iwth all the fats. Some salads have as much fat as burgers and fries. We eat out so rarely that when we do, I get what I want. I'm more concerned about the salt than I am about fat/calories.

Yes, many of the salads have as much fat and calories as getting a cheeseburger.

Well....some fast food can be healthy right? A caesar salad per se?..Chick-fil-A grilled chicken salad. HERE is a website where you can check the calorie count, fat grams, etc. of many fast food restaurants. For me, most fast food is unhealthy even if it's low in calories/fat because of the sodium content and additives...I have to pay close attention to that. Fried foods...any fried foods can be healthy or unhealthy depending on what it is you're frying, the type of oil it is fried in, whether or not it's breaded and what it's breaded with, etc. Fast Food salads (even Ceasar) also can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the factors above. If you want to eat healthy, you basically need to do your homework and find out all the details of the fast foods you eat.

I find, for eating out, that the healthiest foods are found at our local restaurants (not chains). One of my favorites serves excellent salads with homemade dressings on the side. They have an excellent tomato shallot dressing--yum!

Also, I thought Wendy's was the healthiest of all burger chains? Hello Solomonsprayer, You will be surprised that some salads at restaurants are not at all that healthy. Some are calorie-fat bombs! Some are actually worse than a big mac at McDonald's believe it or not. If you want a salad at a restaurant, make sure the salad is just green vegetables, you can never trust them with their dressings and stuff. Where I get this information, go to menshealth.com and they have this Eat This, Not That! e-newsletter. It really opens your eyes up to the restaurant world. And they now have 2 books. One published for adults, one for kids. About Wendy's, yes they are the healthiest burger chain, but they are not nutritionally infallible. French Fries are always caloric and fatning. But what is nice about Wendy's is that they have baked potatoes which are a healthy alternative side. I hope this helps. As for me, I go to Subway when I have a craving. I don't go too often though, don't have the money for that. But they are a LOT healthier than many other restaurants out there. But be sure to stick to the 6 grams of fat or less menu, and do not go for the chips and soda pitfalls. Not all their subs are 6 grams of fat or less. Some of their subs are very fatning, like the Meatball sub, Tuna sub, or the Italian sub. And do not even think Quizno's is healthy. They are home to the worst sandwich in America. I just don't like it for some reason, toasted or untoasted. I've tried them all and only the plain white Italian bread is sometimes ok (depending on my mood). I like the subs from local places that are not big names, because their bread is better. That really makes/breaks a sub for me many times. I'm going to need to check the salads from fast food now. Don't want a fat buster. Ruby Tuesday though is my favorite.

Jewish delies are pretty good for sandwiches if you have one by you. I quit going to subway. The bread isn't that good as other restaurants and they now give 1 slice of meat on their sandwiches and raised the price to the same price as quiznos. So I go to Quiznos, you get a little more meat on their sandwiches and its a little bit better quality.

I love sushi, but don't eat it often because of the white rice. If they could just leave that part off, I'd be nutritionally happy. When I visit a sandwich shop, I always get mine as a salad and avoid the breads made from refined flour. And I skip dressings (just have a little salt and pepper, maybe parmesan cheese) and croutons. We have a Baja Jack's that just opened that is sort of like a Chipotle's. I love that because I can get very tasty food and, upon request, they'll serve it on lettuce instead of a tortilla (the refined flour again). Any restaurant we visit, I look for grilled meats and veggies. No bread, no fried anything. There's almost always something I can find on the menu. Italian restaurants are the most difficult because of the pasta. I don't avoid carbs, by the way, just refined foods.

Macaroni Grill, The Olive Garden and the Mongolian Grill. The Mongolian Grill is my favourite. I have a big bowl of just vegatables and tofu seasoned with garlic and sesame.

I didn't realize tortilla is a refined kind of carb. I eat those all the time. The rice too is bad? Yikes! After this type of thread....I feel almost strapped and unable to eat anything lol.

Refined carbs: Bleached flour, Bleached rice, Sugar, Canned fruit in syrup. Anything made with these ingredients. Basically anything that has been processed to remove the fiber.

They are home to the Worst Sandwich in America. At Subway, you can always ask for double meat, and the 6 grams of fat or less subs just increase another 2 or so grams. So if you were to get the ham sub double meat, it would probably be 7 grams of fat. That is actually not bad at all. Here is the Quizno's sandwich that is getting all the attention. And it is their most ordered one too. quote:
Quizno's Classic Italian (large) 1,510 calories 82 g fat 3,750 mg sodium 106 g carbs A large homemade sandwich would more likely provide about 500 calories. Cut the Calories: Isn't it obvious? Order a small—or save half for later. http://www.menshealth.com/eatthis/20-Worst-Foods/14_Worst_Sandwich.php That is why if I do get quiznos, it is once in a great, great, great while. This is exactly why I mainly go to Subway. And monamie, they also have wheat bread too. Your sister in Christ Jesus, Jessica

Whoever said the Olive Garden is healthy needs to look up the nutritional info there. They are nowhere near healthy. I do get the sammies. I am not as concerned about the fat content as I am about the calorie content. The whole wheat bread is not 100% whole wheat bread and probably contains high fructose corn syrup. Just because the bread is whole wheat doesn't mean its healthy. Just compare labels next time you are at the grocery store unless make your own bread or go to Whole Foods and buy theirs. Also most people that order do not need to order a footlong sub, chips and a drink. That alone is half the calories a day for an average adult male. I always laugh when these people go to subway and get the healthy meal and eat more than they need to. A six inch sub is a good portion for many people for lunch. I'll just repeat, do not expect healthy meals from a chain restaurant. You can make better choices by researching the foods you get, but the only way to truly control what you eat is to make it yourself.
