According this Scripture, we are required to know beyond any reasonable doubt that our salvation is genuine. It will be too late to get before Jesus in judgment and say I thought I was.
Ah, the error of proof-texting out of context....
Paul's words to them was a challenge to the illogic of challenge of his apostleship, not his challenge them to check themselves on their salvation. There were some in the Corinthian church who had challenged his apostleship. But their faith was based upon the acceptance of his message. If he won them to Christ, but wasn't God's messenger, then their own salvation was in doubt.
He was essentially saying their reasoning was illogical.
