If you go to Ryanne's link, and click on return to rear-facing album there are pictures of kids up to age 3 and 4 rear-facing. Click on an individual picture and you can see a better view of how their legs are positioned.

My son is only 4 months old but weighs 19 pounds and is 27 inches long. He looks uncomfortable in his Graco Snugride.

My MIL gave me $300 last night to buy a new carseat. What should I get? I have a Ford Escort (tiny car) and the Snugride barely fits. I have heard a lot of good things about the Britax carseats but they seem huge.

I want to keep him RF as long as possible. He is a big boy so I need a seat with as high of a weight limit as possible.

Emily, my son was a big boy at 6 months old, but then he started crawling and he slowed way down in his weight gain. HERE is the car seat we use, and we've been pretty happy with it. I can't speak to how well it would fit in your car, though. The weight limit is 30lbs for rear facing.

For this kind of stuff you should always look at safety rating, consumer reports, that sort of thing.

We have a cheap Cosco convertible seat that is good. They both fit in the Escort we had. But, for sure you can get something really good for $300. Cosco has some higher end seats that are about the same size as my cheap ones.

A couple things to look for in a seat when you get recommendations, these may or may not be important to you.....Does the seat recline while the baby is sitting in it? Mine doesn't, and, that's been a pain, but some higher end Cosco seats do. I have to take the seat out of the car and adjust a bar to make it be reclined. Do the straps adjust easily while the baby is in the seat? I like to loosen them while I'm getting them in, and then tighten it after they are buckled. And, like you said, does it have a high weight capacity rear facing?

Walmart should let you put a carseat in your car before you buy it to make sure it fits, so just make sure you take advantage of that. Graco has a great website where you can choose what features you want in a carseat. That may give you a better idea.

The EFTA is a great seat, it actually rear faces to 35lbs.

The Britax Boulevard is a good seal for small cars, but it only forward faces to 40lbs. Do you have a BRU? I would go there and try out some seats, they should have everything except the Cosco Scenara. The Scenara is a good seat, but IMO it's better as a secondary seat then a primary one if you have the funds available. Gabby hates her's and screams the entire time she's in it, but she doesn't mind her True Fit at all.

For David, because he is big(and likely to be tall) my recommendations would be the EFTA, the Britax Marathon or Boulevard, or the Compass True Fit. The Marathon and True Fit have the highest top strap height and tallest shells which will give you the most life as far as David's height. They also have the highest weight limits both rear and forward facing.

The last option is the Sunshine Kids Radian 65, but it has a bad rear facing angle that was "iffy" in our Xterra so I really don't think it would fit in your little Escort.

Oh, I forgot a couple more things that I looked for when choosing a seat...

1) Is the cover easily removable for washing?(the True Fit cover comes totally off without uninstalling the seat)

2) Are the straps adjustable without being re-threaded?(the True fit is, I have not checked this on other seats)

3) Built in lock-offs since we don't have LATCH and I hate messing with the metal clips.

I totally agree. That's the one we have for Jimmy that I have to take the seat out to recline it. It was $35 at Walmart.

Yeah, we have one at my mom's house but I think we are going to need to change it to something more comfortable.

The kids seem(ed) to be comfortable in it, but I can guarantee with Gabby's big buns that buckle will be cutting her off in no time. LOL! Timmy's butt is average size for his weight/height, but before he reached the maximum weight capacity, that buckle was squishing him. I wish it would have had another setting to bring the buckle further out.

Your buckle doesn't adjust? Ours does but it still is not made for big buns.

Nope, it doesn't. I bought mine 2.5 years ago, when they were black and tan. Maybe that wasn't a feature for that older model.

Does the buckle's strap just get longer, or do you take the buckle out and put it into another slot that's further out similar to the way you would adjust the height of the shoulder straps?

Um, it just moves forward to make more space for buns.

Ryanne- thanks for all of the info. I was hoping you would respond. From other things you have posted you feel the same as I do about ERF. I am thinking of getting a Cosco Scenara for now and then getting a True Fit when the new model comes out in January. It will have an anti rebound bar that the current model doesn't have.

Don't tell me that! Seriously... Oh well, we will need a second car seat so maybe I'll just live with the Scenara in DH's car until January then put her current TF in there and put the new one in the truck. Oh the choices. I think when we have another baby we are just going to skip the infant carrier and go straight to a convertible, probably another True Fit. The padding is SO nice for an itty bitty.

Yes, I am very, very pro ERF

Oh, it was pictures like THIS that also aided in my decision. The TF just looks so much more comfortable.

Yeah, I saw that. I wonder how much Gabby will weigh in January... It might not be worth spending that much just for the anti-rebound if she's only going to use it for 4-5 more months. Although, who knows. Her weight gain could slow way down between now and then.

Where do they put their legs? My granddaughter is 3 1/2 y.o. and only weights 30 lbs. There is no way she could comfortably sit rear facing (she's 38" tall).

She is not a ton taller then my DD(who is just a hair shorter then 32inches), they just sit "criss cross applesauce"(or indian style for those who aren't worried about being PC).

It seems to me that sitting with legs crossed might be more comfortable for them than sitting there with their legs dangling.

That probably depends on the kid. If I have to sit without being able to move or straighten my legs for very long I feel like I'm going to crawl out of my skin.

I agree. I am definitely a "legs up" kind of person. My feet are usually on the dashboard(only if I'm a passenger) because it's uncomfortable to me to sit with them down.

There was a woman in the hospital who was sitting this way when she and her husband were hit by someone. The airbag went off. The results were not fun. Not fun at all.
