ORIGINAL: LaurainAL What are the recommendations for moving a child to a convertible seat? DS is 17 lbs. and is still in his infant carrier. All our pediatrician told us was that he should be rear facing until he is a year old AND 20 lbs. From what I understand, convertible seats are built to support a child right from birth (ours says rear facing 5-35 lbs). However, I know ours doesn't cradle the baby as well as we had wanted her to be. That being said, at 5 months things were getting tight for Akeelah in the infant carrier as she was (and still is) a big girl. It was hard getting her in their comfortably, so that is when we moved to the convertible seat. For us, it wasn't about her weight, but how comfortable she was when we decided to make the switch to convertible car seat.

ORIGINAL: SteelMagnolia Cosco is what we got. It does recline, but can't be strapped in while you recline it. It was like $50 from Wal*Mart. It got excellent safety ratings. The straps are easily adjustable for a baby with a coat on or off. It's just one little button and you pull or push the strap. You see it on Amazon HERE. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't recline it while the baby is in it, and the cupholder is stupid and really hard to put in there. Everything else about it is great. The only problem I'm running in to is that Timmy is almost 40 pounds (he just turned 2), so he will outgrow it anytime now. I don't feel comfortable with him in a booster seat with just a seatbelt and no 5-point harness. So, if you're thinking Hunter might be 40 pounds before he's ready for a booster with seatbelt, you may want to consider a carseat with a 60 pound rating. I don't think convertible carseats go any higher than that. Isaac has this one as well. He's been in it for nearly 2 years now. It has worked great and held up very well. It still looks new, no faded fabric or anything.

Although it's been a long time since we had to deal with a car seat, the height and weight limits on car seats are somewhat misleading. What determines the fit of a car seat is the length of the child from shoulder to seat, whether the child's head is too much above the top of the cars seat top, and how wide the child is. Our daughter outgrew the width of her first car seat because her shoulders and upper body was pretty broad. Her second car seat she out grew when her ears began to sit above the top of the car seat top. Neither of those were the listed qualifications of total body height and total body weight.

What do you do with a 16 yr old at 4"9? Ontario introduced very strict booster seat laws a little while back, and the height and weight requirements are only used until the child turns 8, then you can take the kids out of the booster seat no matter what size they are. When we bought our car seat the girl who sold it to us told us that the govt was planning on changing the rules to a child who is 12 has to be in a booster seat, and no one under 15 in the front seat. That seemed a little extreme to me, though I haven't found anything to prove that.

I depend on this site whenever I need to move up to a different carseat. It has all the info I could possibly need about height, weight, car make & model, etc.

Something to keep in mind about the 3-in-1 style of seats if you are going to have multiple children... When #2 hits the out-of-infant-bucket stage, will #1 still be needing the car seat features or just the booster seat features? Because if #2 will only need booster seat at that time, it will be much cheaper to hand down #2's seat to #1 and buy an ordinary booster for #2. (Cheaper than buying the car seat that #1 will need, while #2 continues to use their old seat.) If this is likely to happen, you can save even more money by not buying a 3-in-1 now, but just a car seat (rear & front facing) with no booster features. Oh, and off the topic, but rear-facing is the safest way for ANY passenger to travel in ANY vehicle. If we were really concerned with reducing injuries, cars would be built will all but the driver's seat facing rearward. That would be fun, eh? Canadian military aircraft are all equipped in this safer way for troop transport, because they don't care if the soldiers feel weird facing the back of the plane as they fly, they just want them to survive a crash as intact as possible.

We got a hand me down ordinary booster seats from my BIL when his son and daughter grew out of theirs. So now we have an infant carrier, 3 in 1 and booster seats, so that we should have all of our bases covered once we have all of our children! (Unless of course, we have twins or more)

Thank you for all the help! I have continued researching the internet as well for all the reviews and I think we have made a selection. We are going this weekend to look at it in person and let Hunter try it out in the store as well. The one that we have picked out as of now is the Evenflo Triumph Advance DLX, we will make a final decision after this weekend. It was highly rated on several websites and I was able to see pictures of it installed with children strapped in. It looks like it might be a good choice for us, but I will let you know after this weekend. Thanks again!

(Unless of course, we have twins or more) Just please keep in mind that carseats do have a "do not use past" date. Generally it's six years past manufacturing. After that, they cannot guarantee that the plastic will hold up under pressure. There's no way to know if the integrity of the seat has been compromised due to age unless it fails in an accident - hardly the way you want to find out.

Well, we bought Hunter's car seat and we love it so far. It fits perfectly in our car, he seems to already love it, and it looks like its going to be a comfy ride for him. We did end up getting the Evenflo Triumph Advance LX, not the DLX...they are basically the same model. But, thanks for all the advice and post, they were very helpful.

Eventhough our daughter is 3, she is petite and weighs around 30lbs. I wonder if she should still be rear facing? My niece who is the same age is in a booster seat. They just don't seem safe to me. My grandaughter is 2 1/2 y.o. and about the same size. She would be way too tall to face backwards (the rear). Where would she put her legs? IMO, a 3 y.o. is physically mature enough to withstand the pressure of the harness holding them in the carseat. I think too much emphasis it put on the weight factor. A petite 3 y.o. girl may weigh the same as as big 10 month old boy but the physical maturity difference is obivious.

Their legs go just like THIS, kids don't die from broken legs but they do die from broken necks. We are all safer rear-facing because the majority(85-90%?) of car accident are from front impact.

Exactly Ryanne. My daughter rear-faced until she had just turned three. She just crossed her legs in front of her, or let them hang over the edge of the seat. Rear-facing can be more comfortable than forward facing since when forward facing their legs just kind of dangle there. I wish we'd have gotten a seat that would have kept her rearfacing longer, but I think she was about at the weight limit of most of those seats when we turned her around anyway. Dee

Well my daughter is much taller than the 1 year old shown in the picture. She will be 4 in March. We are following our pediatricians recommendations.
