Definitely!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I just made that drooling comment as a fun way to show that we have some similar interests..it was not out of envy at all. I haven't been all over the world or anything..but there are many things that I HAVE gotten to see and do..so I don't begrudge anyone else what they have.

Deb! What a wonderful blog and great pictures! I wish we had something like that around here.

Goodness, Terri, have you tried Charleston? That's a virtual treasure trove of historic sites/things to see. I know because I lived there for 5 years. And I think South Carolina is a small enough state, that a drive there shouldn't be too bad.

Oh yeah! Charleston is great! I meant like actually here within town. All we've got is Andrew Jackson State Park and the court house that burned down a month or 2 ago.

No, Deb, you aren't flaunting it or I wouldn't visit your thread or blog. It is vital to recognize and embrace the blessings God has given you. People like us realize that; I pity folks who are too caught up in themselves to see what they have, disabled or otherwise.
I grew up in a big city; I'm just a small town girl. For years we had no bus service at all, but the advantages of a small town far outweigh the advantages of a large town. I was willing to go if the Lord intended, but He only moved me from one small town to another. I've told my sons, I'll anywhere to be near them.

I live in a town south of Boston. Trips using public transportation take between an hour-and-a-half to two hours, depending on connections. But paratransit usually takes longer because it's a shared service. Also, it's inflexable. You make reservations at least 24 hours before the trip. If you want to stay longer, too bad. If the van's late, too bad. If they have four drop-offs in three other towns, too bad. And did I mention that the vans are refurbished cargo vans? No shock absorbers.

Morning, Deb!

Weekend has been crazy, today is more of the same.

Hey, you were asking about Walk to Emmaus. Here is a short explanation of it. I'm United Methodist, so Emmaus is the version that I'm going to, however a number of church denominations have something similar. I'm really looking forward to this.

So, Darcy...is it a prayer retreat, a teaching retreat, a meditative retreat, or what? I should Google it.

Hi Mike. What's up with you today? We just had meatball subs with John's mom in honor of Columbus Day. Tomorrow we'll go to Cheesecake Factory at South Shore Plaza. Hopefully, Thursday our friend who has a wheelchair van will take us to Lousia May Alcott's house in Concord. And Saturday we'll go to a party celebrating the 90th birthday of John's aunt. What a week!

Hi Deb, have fun tomorrow! That mall has been greatly renovated in the past 15 years or so. John will attest to how it used to be a single level mall only.

I need to run an errand today as a new phone that I picked up isn't working, so I need to exchange it instead. Other than that, not much planned at all.

A friend from church is in construction, and he actually worked on the rennovation of South Shore Plaza. He knows every column in that mall! Recently, they built a separate, but semi-attached, building for The Cheesecake Factory.

Cool Deb! I am just amazed how it looks now. You would have never known that it used to be a single story plaza instead!

Deb, kind of all of the above. I know there are a lot of speakers, anyway. I'm going because a number of folks at my church that I admire for their walk with Christ have gone, and are encouraging me to do the same. As a matter of fact, one of my best female friends is my sponsor/mentor for this.

I actually googled Emmaus myself, and most of the hits were either the Upper Room explanation of it, Emmaus group sites from different districts (it's pretty much world-wide), mixed in with a couple of really weird people trying to say things like "contemplative prayer is of the devil." Okay. That's just strange.

I'm not sure I'd say contemplative prayer is of the devil, but I question how biblical it is. Not to step on your toes, Darcy. I just have a very conservative approach to theology. My church in California taught contemplative prayer, so I'm very familar with the concept. Anyway, I pray you'll be ministered to on the retreat.

Ugh...I ate too much at the Cheesecake Factory.

But we went to B. Dalton's Bookstore to get John's aunt a gift card, and I saw Longfellow's translation of Dante's Divine Comedy for $19.95. Yup...I bought it!

I think contemplative prayer is like all things. It can be a good thing or it can get twisted into a bad thing. Personally, I think if one stays rooted in the Word, contemplative prayer is a very beautiful thing and I see it throughout Scripture and the early church fathers (it's not a "new" thing). I think sometimes the church can get too cerebral. Sometimes I think God wants us to just sit back, stop thinking and just be still before Him and relate. Some complain that Catholics don't go directly to God because they have intermediaries like the Saints and yet, I think too often we do the same with the Bible. I'm not downplaying Scripture - anything that contradicts God's Word is not of God BUT God can't be contained in a small book. I want to know and relate to all of God - not just what I can read in a book - no matter how great that book is.

Oh, B. Dalton's was also selling Homer's Illiad and Odyssey in one volume, which made me think of you, Darcy. I'll read those on line, though...if I ever read them again. I read them 34 years ago in college, and didn't particularly enjoy them then. Or was it Sister Nicholas I didn't enjoy? (Later, I grew to love her, and she's my favorite teacher of all time.) But anyway, I know you're studying them now, Darcy, so I hope you're enjoying them more than I did!

But all of what God says to us this side of heaven is in Scripture, I believe. There's no further revelation. And we'll never totally plumb the depths of Scripture! The more I read and study it, the more there is to learn from it. And then there's applying it! After 37 years as a Christian, I'm just beginning to scratch the surface!

All things should be weighed against Scripture (nothing should contradict God's Word), but that's not the same thing as saying that all things are in Scripture. Scripture is the foundation. I know God is love because Scripture tells me - but I can know in other ways too even if I have never read the Bible. Scripture says that even the rocks cry out and that men are without excuse because all of creation points to Him.

I'm thinking of the song "Indescribable" and that pretty much sums up my thoughts. No matter how wonderful and true God's Word is, there are simply no words on this earth that can possibly describe how great God is. There are times in my life where God has spoken to me in ways that were not Words but conveyed to me more than any word could, how great His love for me is and how amazing He is.

That's the essence of contemplative prayer. It's not getting "new revelations" (that's where some folks twist it), but it's acknowledging God is indescribably amazing.

Hey Deb!

Great post, Kristin.

I agree; at least that's what contemplative prayer for me is.

Darcy, I went on several Cursillos back in the early '90s . . . which are somewhat similar to the Emmaus Walk. I hope your experience will be very blessed.

Thanks, Shar-Mar. I'm really looking forward to it, I haven't been on a retreat in years.

That, and it's reinforced physical rest. Which sounds very nice right now.

There is so much MORE to our Christian lives than we could even dream of, and so many of us are willing to just play around. I'm hungry for MORE. And I'm just getting started good!

We canceled our plans for Concord tomorrow because rain is predicted. Today's weather was spectacular, so we boarded a bus for Ashmont, planning to do a self-guided literary tour of Beacon Hill. As I boarded the bus, my chair's battery indicator went from green to yellow. Evidentally, Enthusiastic One forgot to plug in my chair last night. When we got to Ashmont, we found a business that allowed us to plug my chair in for an hour, so we sat there reading our guide book about all the literary sites in Boston, Cambridge and Concord. By the time my chair was charged, it was really too late to go to Boston, so we came back to our town, ate at Wendy's, and visited the library. It was pretty chilly, so we were actually thankful we couldn't go to Boston; we would have come home later and been too cool. Wasn't the Lord good in having Enthusiastic One forget to charge my chair?
