We've lived in our house for 5.5 years, and I've toyed with the idea of figuring out a way to enclose our small covered patio off our bedroom sliding glass door, so that our inside-only kitties could get a safe n' shady taste of the outdoors, without the dangers of being outdoors.

Last month, we adopted a fluffy white marshmellow fluffybutt girl cat who showed up in our yard with a messed-up ear. $900 in vet care later, she now is an inside-only no-ears cat who has to stay out of the sunshine forever (she had skin cancer.) So, she was the CATalyst for my decision to pursue enclosing our covered patio and turning it into a "catio."

I just signed the contract and paid the deposit and had final, detailed measurements of our small covered patio taken .... and they will install the "catio" wall and door in about 3 hours NEXT FRIDAY! Woo hoo! (I hired a man who builds custom aviaries to add a wire/redwood wall and door, enclosing the patio)

Our inside-only kitties will officially be getting a safe, shady taste of the "great outdoors" ... just inches from tree-frolicking squirrels and three very popular bird feeders! I just had the concrete all pressure washed and sealed, and we've cut back some nearby bushes. The catio will have a 6 ft tall cat condo, a bench with cushions, and an 8 foot shelf for the kitties to relax on. I went to Lowe's yesterday to get 48 feet of outdoor floor covering, but they are out. I will check Home Depot for the floor covering and for a new overhead light fixture. My goal is to have everything complete before my wonderful DH comes home! from Iraq!!!!

Please show pictures or email me with the pics after it's finshed. I'm looking at doing the same for my indoor kitties who beg to go outside.

I like the word "fluffybutt". We have a black lab we call Chunkybutt (real name is Boomer) but your word fluffybutt is much nicer.

Please, do show pictures when it is finished. It sounds like a very nice place for the cats to go to. Keep up your good work with all of the animals.

Harvie,

Marsha isn't deaf too, is she? I know that here in the UK white cats are often deaf, for some reason.

She's not deaf ... but both of her ears (outside part) have been amputated off.

Yes, we had to have that done with our ginger and white boy; he ended up looking like a sort of
a teddy-cat!

They (a husband and wife team) started by attaching a beam of wood across the top of the patio, then a matching beam across the concrete floor. Then they installed three panels -- the first with a door, the other two panels without. He then attached an 8 ft inside shelf. He finished by adding trim along the sides and top -- they will be drying for the next 48 hours. He does a really nice job with details ... everything is nicely finished, and not even the screws show! And, of course, it's been a big hit with the kitties (most of whom have never been outside before!)

GETTING STARTED

FIRST PANEL (WITH DOOR) GOING IN

TWO PANELS IN
THREE PANELS IN

OOOH, IT'S SCARY OUT THERE!

I SEE BIRDS! I SEE BIRDS!

TRYING IT OUT

FINISHING TOUCH (WITH SCRIPTURE!)

The cats should love the new porch. He did a very nice job of building it.

That is so awesome Harvie!!! You are the coolest cat mommy ever! It looks so good! What are the panels made out of? I am just wondering how easy it would be for cats to wreck the screens.

I so would love to do this for our cats. If we ever buy a home I want to make sure we will have an area like this so our cats can enjoy the outdoors without actually leaving the house. We have a townhouse that is being built right now that has a porch and a balcony, but by law we won't be able to enclose either of them. But our place is full of HUGE windows so I know our cats will love it.

Have you ever posted a picture of each of your cats? I would so love to see pictures of all of them! And your doggies too :o)
