Sooo, having trouble with my home computer...

Vista is reverting to "reduced functionality mode" which means after I get the welcome screen and log in under my admin account, i get nothing but a black screen with a mouse pointer.

I have gone in under my guest account and googled it, but can't find a solution. Under the admin account I can't get msconfig to run, or regedit.exe (two of the "fixes" I found on the web...
Mostly I can hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and get the task manager, and from there I can run c:\ and get to windows explorer, but that's about it.

My copy of Vista is genuine, so I'm really not sure what the problem is...

Any suggestions?

ETA... Please don't suggest getting a mac or switching to Linux, as that doesn't help me today.

Though, I am seriously considering a mac for my next purchase.

has anything changed right before the issue started occuring? windows updates? added new hardware/software? opened any attachments? can you boot into safe mode. at reboot start tapping F8 key and choose safe mode. then try running adaware if you have it, or do safe mode with networking, and go to trend micros, and do a house call scan.

I think there might have been an Avast update happening, but I'm not sure what all happened, because my husband was home, and he can't remember what he clicked. It said something about updating and restarting. That's all he can remember.

I have tried to get the boot screen to choose safe mode to come up, but can't get it. I will try again when I get home from work. Thanks.

I fixed it, finally.

Went in in safe mode, turned of UAC and uninstalled the antivirus, fixed everything right up.
