Shopping in anticipation of a Black Friday sale (we've finally decided to get one on that fateful day, as long as we get a price we can't refuse, if that makes any sense), I saw a monitor on amazon that had a USB cable.

http://www.amazon.com/Inch-1440X900-Response-300CD-Brightness/dp/B001BBMU4Q/ref=sr_1_146?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1227766113&sr=1-146

Now I'm not complaining, as it actually would be more convenient, than having to worry about getting one with a VGA port (which our current desktop has), as well as one with a DVI port (since the replacement for our current desktop will most likely only have DVI). But I've never heard of a monitor with a USB port/cable before...so I'd like to find out...

Does the quality of the signal decline when transferred over a USB cable? I'm tempted to think that the only reason why this was offered was for convenience only; if it was just as good picture quality, I"m sure this would have become more widespread than it is now.

OK--what's going on here...will the usb cable deteriorate the signal?

I believe the USB on that monitor is for the builtin webcam. It still uses the analog and digital video connectors for video signal.

Now that seems reasonable enough. Thanks...

The usb connection is for the webcam or for plugging in a thumb drive, etc since many people put their pcs on the ground. It should have a vga and a dvi port.

While this monitor doesn't use USB for it's display, there are some that do. They're relatively new, and are a niche product. The OP asked "will the usb cable deteriorate the signal?". The answer is yes, at least when there is a lot of motion on the screen. They don't support any sort of 3D, they can't play back video very well, and they use a fair amount of processing power to emulate a video card. So, what use are they? I'm not sure what the market is, but probably for people who want a second (or third or fourth) screen to show spreadsheets or stock info or other relatively static stuff, but don't have the option to put in a new video card, or the space for a second video card.
