That's great, Zack! There are big problems in your family, and a truce now doesn't mean the problems won't flare up again. Part of your becoming an adult (and you are already well on your way) will be realizing that your parents are in a kind of dance that isn't healthy, and that dance isn't your dance. You can back up, watch, say to yourself "I wish they wouldn't do that" and realize YOU don't have to do that. I grew up in a severely abusive family, and one of the things I did was look at my parents and say to myself, "I am never going to treat my kids that way." By God's grace, I didn't. I became a Christian, watched other families closely that looked healthy, read my Bible and saw what God said about relationships, read books, went to family living seminars, talked to wise people, and held out for a husband who was willing to do life God's way. My kid grew up healthy, loved, sane and not loaded down with the baggage I received from my parents. It was all by God's grace, and you can do this, too. We make our families better by being better parents than our parents were. That doesn't mean we don't love our parents, it means we weigh what they do and pick the good stuff and try not repeat the bad stuff. That's pretty much what "honor" in the Old Testament means (to weigh, to consider seriously). You have a good mind, you are very mature, and your job is to find out how to live healthy even if your parents won't. They have taught your their way to live but you don't have to do that part. God bless you, Zack - you're a good guy. Be strong in the Lord!
