Shared DSL question - 11/18/2008 9:29:22 AM

I've set up routers to share high-speed DSL several times under Windows XP, with good results. But I have a friend who owns a new HP desktop running Vista Home Premium, and his son has a Toshiba notebook running the same.

I can connect the desktop directly to the DSL modem, and the connection is fine. When I install the router, however, I basically end up with both systems networked together, but the desktop shows a red 'X' between the local network and the internet.

The DSL modem uses an IP of 192.168.1.254, and the router uses an IP of 192.168.1.1. I'm fairly certain the router is functioning properly - I tried it at another location using Windows XP systems, and it worked fine.

Not being familiar enough with Windows Vista, I'm afraid I'm missing some vital piece of information. Anybody got any suggestions?

Thanks!

It doesn't seem right that the modem would have a local IP address. Are you sure you've got it plugged into the correct port on the router?

I'm about as sure as I can be, FigmentPez. From the wall/phone jack, to the DSL modem, then from the RJ-45 port on the DSL modem to the WAN port on the router, and finally from port 1 of 4 on the router to the network card in the computer.

Another possible clue - if I have my friend's desktop computer hooked directly to the DSL modem, it shows up under network devices, a Motorola something-or-other. If I add the router to the mix, IT shows up under network devices - but the Motorola DSL modem doesn't. Both should appear, right?

Yeah, sounds like you've got the physical connections set up right. I've heard of people not realizing they need to hook the modem up to the WAN port, but you've got that right.

Not as far as I know. I can only see my router in my Network devices. I'm not very experienced with networks, but here goes:

1. Is your friend using DSL as well?
2. Does your DSL modem require any sort of log-in that you'd have to give to your router? (I think it's called PPPoE or something) My router has that setting under it's WAN options (I have it set for Dynamic IP for my cable modem, but it says PPPoE is for most DSL users)
3. If you log-in to your router, and check it's status, does it have a connection to the internet? Is there an option to have it ping a site?

Try clicking on the "X." That should bring up repair options. You will likely get the option to obtain new IP address or reset adapter. One of those should fix it, most likely the latter. There's really nothing special about Vista that would cause problems unless you are trying to share files, but even that's pretty easy, just different. I have 2 Vista, 2 XP, and a Win 2000 system on my network and they work fine.

Edit: You did make sure the modem was connected to the Internet before plugging it to (or powering on) the router, didn't you?

As FigmentPez said, DSL modems usually need some sort of logon, though sometimes is a saved setting in the DSL modem. You need to verify with the ISP if your friend has the router configured correctly for that model of modem, there's no way around it. DSL is often not plug and play like cable modems. The ISP's web site probably has online configuration instructions.
