Hey. I think this is like my third post in this area in the past couple of months...which used to be a place that I never went into... So, I guess a lot of questions have come my way lately... So, here is the newest one. This morning, I turned on my computer. I saw something different that I'd never seen before in the little toolbar in the right bottom corner where the time and battery and everything is... So, I rolled over it and it said something about sharing files. I clicked on it, and it gave a name follwed by ":PC wants to share files with you." It asked me then to accept or deny. I denied that, and then another one just like this one popped up except with a different name. We have been using an unsecured connection lately because my husband hasn't set it up with a password and such to put the security there. Something I know we have GOT to do... My question is this...how much can a person get if I deny? Is there still a way for them to get stuff from me with an unsecured connection? I don't know how to secure it, or I would... What CAN happen...worst case scenario, most likely scenario?

First does anyone else use your pc? They may have downloaded some file sharing program. But Turn off Remote Desktop Turn off File and Print Sharing Set up a secured connection. Someone's already located your pc which raises the possibility that they'll try to hack into it. Hacking (prob some bored teen) is rare but you still have the possibility of viruses and spyware.

I recommend caution at this point. There is something running on your system that you are not aware of and you don't know where they came from. Be very careful at this time, your machine seems to have been compromised. Do NOT accept any connection unless you know what it is, who it is, and what you are doing. My guess is you either have been infected with a trojan or something like one. This could have been by running something that looked "innocent" on the surface, but installs something nasty underneath. Either setup the Windows firewall to protect your machine or download ZoneAlarm and set it up to protect your machine. Next install a virus scanner if not already installed, make sure its updated, and run a scan. Next install something like AdAware (from lavasoft) to scan for adware and other spy software.
