my apologetics teacher said that we were saved to a correct theology and not by the correctness of our theology

what do you think of this?

I would say we're not saved to or by any theology - we're saved by Christ, and to Christ. Theology is nice, but the study of God must never replace God. We don't have to have extensive Bible knowledge to receive salvation.

The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8). The fact that the agency of God's grace is the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is correct theology. The Bible also says that when we believe this fact of correct theology, we will be saved (Rom 10:9). Perhaps this is what your teacher means by "saved to a correct theology and not by the correctness of our theology".

What is meant by "theology"? A set of propositions?
Theologian, say the church fathers, is the man who truly prays; we understand theology is the experience and knowledge of God not only mental but beyond that as well. We are saved by Christ, when we are in Him, in His Body. The experience of the Body of Christ being in Christ testifies of the correct "theology", meaning mutual experience of the Living God.

I'll confess, I knew very little doctrine when I was saved. It took a lot of reading & study to develop any. But I knew that I was a hopeless sinner, that Jesus, God Incarnate, paid the penalty for my sin, and that I was born again by grace through faith.

However, had I been presnted the Mormon god or the Jehovah's Witness Jesus, then I'd still be working my way into eternal separation from God.

So, there is some correct teaching required first.

Ness55:

It is absolutely essential the gospel preacher have the right theology. Its extremely important that the gospel be presented as truly and rightly as possible, its extremely important that the gospel be given as coherently as possible.

The sinner knows nothing of God rightly, he has presuppositions, assumptions, sermons, sound bites, newpaper articles, testimonies of christians, cults....and on and on; especially in America.

What he does not have is a genuine understanding of the gospel, sin, Christ or redemption in Christ.

Proper theology is absolutely necessary to obtain a genuine convert. Otherwise if its false or corrupt we have the RCC, the Mormons, JW's, Rosicurians, Unitarians, and every other abomination out there. We have spurious converts, false confessions, innoculated people against the true gospel and those are within the doors of good congregations.

Salvation comes by proper theology and only by proper theology, otherwise you have just opened the door to every cult and abomination to walk in the door and begin proselytizing the congregations. We owe the sinner for the sake of Jesus Christ who was crucified as sound and clear a message of the truth as it can be given through us. Sound theology is not just for the saints but its an absolute to obtain genuine converts.

Regeneration is by the inworking grace of God, that is something God himself must do, the Spirit of God births a man into God's kingdom. But that portion of Gods plan for salvation that deals with the calling of men to Christ, the proclamation of the gospel, the declaration of the finished work of Christ is a God-entrusted message and woe be to those who corrupt it and twist it for their own means. Blood will be on their hands and God will hold these false prophets and sleeping watchmen guilt of the blood of those whom they didnt warn or sound the alarm that judgment was coming.

Quantifying the amount of theology within the sinner so that he might convert is a venture in speculation and missing the point. The call of God to proclaim the true gospel carries with it the responsibility of proper theology and the love toward God and man that what that messenger is saying is from right motive.

Your apologetics teacher is right in the sense that sinners do not have any sound theology until they have been instructed by the Spirit of God, and their hearts have received the word of God rightly divided and presented in the gospel message. Saints have much more knowledge of the truth because the Spirit of Truth lives in them and He teaches them.

They that are born of God are born of the incorruptable seed which is the word of God. The word of God in the form of 'another gospel' is damning to the preacher and unvalidated by God Himself.

John
