I confess that I'm out of touch with modern electronics, and I need y'all's help.

Our church wants to start recording sermons onto CD's, and I'm the one they've picked to make it happen. Right now, we still record sermons onto cassette tapes. We have a laptop computer which we purchased last year to run EasyWorship, a software program we now use in conjunction with a new projector we purchased. We only recently abandoned the old "overhead transparencies" system.

My questions:

(1) Can I use the CD drive in our laptop computer, coupled with a software program to record sermons live? If so, which software?

(2) Once recorded, what's the best way to make copies? If I need to buy a machine, I have the church's green light to do so, but I want to be informed before I do.

What say you? :-)

How many copies of the sermon are you talking about? If it's only a dozen or so, and you've got someone to swap CDs every 5-10 minutes or so, then you shouldn't need a duplicating machine, just any computer with a working CD-RW drive. More than that, and it's a question of how fast does the job need to get done, and does anyone have the time to sit around swapping CDs and hitting "Burn again" in your program of choice. If you've got volunteers, you could even distribute the CD copying.

As for the recording, I haven't done any so I don't have any specific advice. If you don't need to clean up the audio at all, you could use just about anything. Possibly even the Sound Recorder that comes with Windows (though it might have a file length limit). The free (and open source) solution I've heard reccomended most often is Audacity. I've never used it, but I hear it's very capable, not just of recording, but of all sorts of audio manipulation.

Read Daniel 7:13-14

Before we started to video the sermons, we were recording the audio. I forget what program we are using, but it was freeware.

Something else to consider is storing them as MP3's and loading them to a website for download. (not sure what the geek quotient is in your church)

Yeah, Audacity seems to be pretty popular. Reaper is another that's pretty decent & free; made by the same guy who made WinAmp, Shoutcast, & GnuTella. I didn't know he did all that and was worth $100M+ until after I met him.

You'll be coming out of one of the outputs on your church's mixer (Ideally a matrix output, but an aux, subgroup, or channel direct output could work, too, depending on what exactly you wanted to record) into the line input of the soundcard on your computer. Built in soundcards, particularly on laptops generally sound like poo; try it out first and if it's noisy, it might be good to invest in a better quality usb or firewire interface.

If somebody mentions Pro Tools, stay away from it for this application. It's a good program; it's what I use primarily at home, but because of the way the internal software is designed, it forces you to do your bounces in real-time, which is ok if you're working on a 3 minutes song, but really bad if you're editing a 45 minute sermon.

At our church, we come out of the mixer directly into a stand-alone CD burner. That's also an option.

Unplug the cable going into that cassette player and plug it into something else. Wait...unless you're just using a boombox with a built-in mic. In that case, never mind.
