Hello, I was wondering if I could get some opinions and testimonies on successful and unsuccessful "family" youth ministry. It seems the new trend today is to attempt a greater involvement of the youth's family in youth ministry. If your attempt at family ministry didn't work, why do you think that is? If it did work, what made it work? What exactely was your goal in attempting a greater involvement of the family in youth ministry? I don't think I've witnessed yet what can be called a successful family ministry and so I'd like to hear stories about your attempts.
Thanks!!!

If I understand what you are asking about, shouldn't that be done at home already?

I think they are asking for ways for a Youth pastor to minister to and include the kids' whole families in what they do and how to work in conjunction with parents and not against them.

I'm certainly no expert...but here are some of the things we do as a ministry here to include parents:

1. I truely believe our ministry is an extension of what goes on at home...sadly, not every student has a great "home life" and this is to be adapted at times.
2. I always encourage our parents come along side of ANY event. I think our parents feel safe about coming to anything at anytime and knowing they'll be apart of whatever it is we're doing.
3. Communication is key. I sent out all kinds of newsletters, e-mails, etc...I also make sure that our parents have access to what's going on in Sunday School and always send them an abbrievated version of my notes for bible studies. This is huge for us because our parents can have ongoing discussion at home about what we're studying.
4. We try to schedule as many service projects as possible, which are able to be completed by ALL members of the family. It's not hard to get a group together and go rake leaves. It's also a chance for families to do ministry together.

Well like what has been said it depends on the teens. We have teens that come from families in the church, teens from families in other churches, and teens with no family going to church.

The thing I have found to be helpful anyway is having parent/leader meetings.
You have these on a semi regular basis, and it informs the families what's going on, as well as lets you get feedback on the home life.
One thing that we have had in the past which is changing with the needs of the church is parents involvement. The youth pastor who I took over from, liked to give the teens their space, away from the parents to let them feel comfortable and be themselves, but as the youth group has grown, and the church finances have dwindled, we have had to ask parents to help out with rides. Sadly though, there are still those parents that just want to drop the teens off, and do their own thing.

As a Youth Pastor you need to make every effort to be a part of the kid’s lives away from Church. School functions are a big part, ball games, plays, whatever they are taking part in. If they have involved parents, many do not; you will meet the parents there and get to know them. Make yourself available to the parents and pray.
In my seven years as a Youth Pastor I had zero luck getting parents involved in any other way. I’m talking about the kids that don’t have parents attend Church. We planned events to get parents involved and never had them show up. If you want to be involved in family ministry with your Youth, you need to plan on going to them, not them coming to you. IMHO

Keep in mind when you are ministering to youth, it is the youth you should focus on.
