My husband's best friend claims he cannot believe in God because he believes in quantum physics. Is there something about believing one that means you can't believe the other?

Not that I can figure out. If you think subatomic randomness is somehow antithetical to faith, then I suppose. Generally, to me these things are smoke screens people put up so they can have an intellectual sounding basis for their rejection of faith. I tend to think they have no real relationship to the underlying decision, just a nice looking cover for it.

Well, I already told him that science and faith are not exclusive of one another, but I freely admit I have never attempted to understand quantum physics/theory/anything. So I'm not really up to speed to argue it.

There are a couple of decent books for amatuers on the topic. Stephen Hawking has one.

They aren't easy reads, but they're very fun. I highly recommend reading one sometime when you're bored. For example - do a google search on "spooky action at a distance" for a really bizarre quantum phenomenon.

I'm posting just so I can say I once participated in a discussion on Quantum Physics. Although, nobody will probably believe me unless I invent a head injury that happens afterwards...

Is it really true that Quantum Physics ain't Rocket Science?

If you are a quantum physicist, it is unlikely you also believe in a personal God. Brains just work differently.

Any quantum physicist on this board? Nope? Thought so.

Aha! But why???

Jimbo--you crack me up.
And GroupW--anything similar to Dr. Seuss in the quantum physics genre?

Since this thread is already derailed, I will post as well.

I thought the title was
Quantum Leap
and I really liked that show.

I found this: http://www.reasons.org/resources/apologetics/other_papers/the_metaphysics_of_quantum_mechanics.shtml

Does it look decent? Any red flags?

Good article. Why would there be red flags? Reasons to Believe is a great organization, in my opinion.

There would be red flags because I wouldn't know any different.

Thanks, though. I bookmarked it and I'll read it this weekend. It'll probably lead to a lot more questions.

I just had to step in here... I trained as a quantum physicist (plus a bit of cosmology, etc.) - yet I believe in a personal God. Note that I trained as a physicist for many, many years before becoming a christian in my 30s - so it was not a case of upbringing.

There are no major issues between QM and theism - and on that basis no issues with QM and Christianity.

Full disclosure: I am no longer a practicing physicist - not enough jobs to go around.

I hope you'll stick around long enough to answer any questions I may have.

I'll be more than happy to try answering your QM questions... Whether I can answer them in terms that are understandable is another matter.

Quantum mechanics has been explained using cats and boxes, I think you'll do alright! EssentialSaltES is probably the best at coming up with analogies to make stuff more understandable. Just ask him if he's got a good one if you're stuck. Sorry ES, I know I shout your name a lot, but you're just good at this kinda stuff.

In my opinion: I agree that to deny God for any reason is just a temporary substitute for the next reason to deny God. I wouldn't feel too bad if you feel like you're out of your league. Share Christ and let the H.S. convict. Then he'll seek out the answers in his own time. Thanks for the OP!
