I want to try this whole keeping a price book as I hear it is suppose to help you save at the grocery store or keep better tabs on when stuff is at the lowest price. I have admit I feel a bit dense because I don't really understand how it works or the point in jotting all my items/prices down in a book. Please someone who does this regularly help me out. Have you saved money since doing this? What is the point? Help?

I am looking for every way possible to save at the grocery store and need all the help I can get. I stay in budget, but my goal is to reduce that budget down by $50- $100 if possible, which I know with some time and effort it can be done. My dream is to one day have a total over $100 and get it down to near $50, not happened yet, but dreams do come true .

I think there are 2 points to price books:

1. if you have more than one store in the area you can figure out who has the best price for each item
2. You can track the pattern of sales. For example you laundry detergent goes on sale every 6 weeks so then you need to buy 6 weeks worth of laundry detergent when that happens. Most sales do go in a rotation like that so if you can figure out the pattern you know when and how much to buy and know that $3.99 might be the sale this week but in 2 weeks it might be BOGO and end up costing $2.99

Basically it's just a notebook where you record the prices of the things you buy at different stores. For the purpose see above.

My mom has both Tightwad Gazzette books and I've read them many times.

I did this informally to see which of our 3 grocery stores would be the cheapest overall. Once I figured out which one was, I started taking note of what their regular prices are like. Now when I look at the flyers for the other stores, I know if their sales are worth it or it's better to just go to the usual store. It's definitely made my grocery shopping easier, and I've noticed an improvement in our grocery bills.

I don't write them down. I just remember them. And usually I'm fairly accurate.

Now ask me to remember where I put the cell phone or car keys and I'm lost.

I don't have a price book, but I've gotten very conscious of prices, and buy most things when I have a coupon, there's a sale, or preferably both. Between sales, coupons, and rebates, I've gotten some items for free, and some I've actually made a small profit, just for buying. I feel like every penny I save where I can, can be applied to other things that may not come up on sale.

It's hard for me to say for sure how much I spend on groceries, because lately I have been stockpiling sale items--the weekly total may stay the same, but the quantity of what I can get for that money has gone up dramatically, and I have a pantry stuffed full, and some things overflowing into a hall closet, of items that I know we use regularly.

Georga Peach,

This takes a lot of time but it's worth it. First thing you do is make a inventory list of everything you use on a daily basis. This includes everthing from food stuffs to health aids such as TP and toothpaste. You can do this on paper, or on the computer with any data base program such as Excell, or Acess.

2. Take a count. 2 btl. 3 cans, 4 bxs. etc.

3. Set a buy more limit. or re-order point. If you use this item a lot then set a higher buy more point.

4. include the last price you paid for this item. Most are printed out on the receipts.
5. include a coupon column and write in your coupon savings price. This will help you organize your coupons savings before you go shopping..

6. add a buy column. How many do you want to buy of that item> for example if your buy more point is two cans but what you really need is six cans, then buy four more when you go shopping.

7. add a total column and total up each item you have marked for buy using the last price that you paid for the item and subtract any coupons
you have. Prices do change but this will give you an estimate of how much money you will need to go shopping with.

This method will save you time and money in the long run. It will cause you to not over buy on an item. It will take the guess work out of remembering how many you have at home of that item. This method will stop you from running out of an item. This method will help you save gas because you won't be running out to the store so much.

When I first came up with this method it took about three months to really get it off the ground due to lack of money. Once you build up your basic foods first, then you can do this with more of the luxury items or the occssional items that you buy.

I hope this will help you, good luck. Fill free to email me back if you have more questions.

Like Donna, I don't keep an actual price book but I know most of the usual prices in my head. But I've been couponing/stockpiling for about eight years now, so I have a pretty solid idea of what things will go on sale and when, and which coupons will be coming out soon. For someone just starting out, a pricebook can definitely help keep it all organized.

I'm another who just has a mental pricebook. I am just really not good with pen and paper organization, a real pricebook done by me would be a complete mess.

However you do it though, if you're aware of different prices at different stores, you can save money and/or get better quality for the same money or less. My price bases are from Aldis. They average much lower than other places. However, occasionally I can get something at our other grocery store for the same price or less, especially if I have coupons. For instance, today actually I'm heading out to stock up on frozen veggies. Aldis has them for the same price but the other store has a much better variety, so I'm going there. Same for spaghetti sauce. But the at the other store, things like honey and plain yogurt and pasta are much more expensive than Aldis, so those things are on my Aldis list for this week.
