I'm starting this to continue a train of thought recently begun in the Southern Gospel folder:

Some folks were lamenting the prevalence of CCM and P&W music in the church today, at the expense (they felt) or Southern Gospel or more traditional music.

I am of the opinion that style is irrelevant, that churches would be well served to seek out songs that are God honoring and conducive to an atmosphere of worship, no matter what style they may be.

In my own church, they utilize great songs, and they seem to run the gamut of styles, very few of which are styles I would normally choose to listen to (not cutting edge or hard enough). But it makes for a wonderful time of worship.

How important is it to be in a church where the musical style suits us personally? Or should we be more concerned about what honors God?

What say you?

^My vote. It's nice if I know the melody and lyrics, but not necessary.

Similarly, I'm struggling with a worship leader who cannot carry a tune. She's seriously like listening to Lucy Ricardo. I'm doing my best to get past her off key warbling and get my heart in the right place, but it's extremely hard. Quitting smoking after 30 years was easier! I'm sure that for some folks the style of music has the same effect. If they don't like the style, it's hard to get the heart in the right place.

I try to concentrate more on the lyrics and not so much what songs we sing. By doing that it helps me to better focus on the content and my worshiping. In my church we do more traditional songs than contemporary. As long as it glorifies God the style doesn't matter, at least IMO.

As long as God is glorified. I feel comfortable singing hymns, P&W, or contemporary.

Yeah, I don't get this sort of thing. You won't see a preacher who's mute, but some people think it's ok for a worship leader to be tone deaf?

I don't believe that it's an "or" question, but an "and" question with an emphasis on importance of priority.
Our first concern...our primary duty...is to worship God in spirit and truth and with a sacrifice of praise.
If we can do that in a manner that is culturally and stylistically comfortable to us then all the better, but the primary focus is still on worshiping God and not the style in which it's done.
I'm not always going to get "my way" in the actions of worship (musically or otherwise), but thankfully "my way" is neither the means nor the end of worship.

Well, we know that man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. I think that, primarily, God is concerned with our attitude and our motives in the music that we make. But I think sometimes people don't really meditate on God's word and seek out how He wants to be worshipped. Also, when it comes to music, I think people need to keep in mind that the worship is for the Lord and not for them.
But I don't think there is necessarily anything wrong with music that lifts our spirits, as long as the music is pleasing to the Lord.

I guess my bottom line would be, pleasing to the Lord first, preference second.

Is God happy when we force ourselves to worship in a style that is difference than what pleases us?

Where does Scripture say that CCM is the "right" way? Well, obviously it doesn't.

I'll still worship to it, but man, I wish they could pick it up. I miss The Insyderz.

Yes, sometimes he is happy when we force ourselves to worship in a style that is difference than what pleases us. Why? Because the things that please our sin natures are very different from the things that please God. If we delight ourselves in the Lord, then the things that please the Lord should please us because we desire what he desires.
And no, Scripture says nothing about CCM being the right way to worship. But I don't believe anybody on here was saying that in the first place.

I would say that it depends on the reasons why. If we're willingly giving up our preference out of some other duty, commitment, or responsibility (e.g. the teaching is good and that's what your family needs; you serve a vital role in the church and your presence is needed, etc) and we maintain a good attitude about it, then yeah, I would think that he would be pleased.

Typically, the reason is because only one style is offered . . .
