What are some things you've heard of people trying to save money that you think are taking it too far.

Example: my mom had a q-tip (or more appropriately a generic cotton swab) balanced on the top of a jar of some liquid medicine because she only used one end of it. I clean her bathrooms for her and in the process of moving it to clean it rolled off the jar and eventually landed on the floor and I probably spent more time trying to rebalance it (before I ended up throwing it away) than it was worth

I've known several people from my parents' generation (over 75) that use a tea bag or coffee grounds more than once.

Well, I save on dogfood because they like to recycle the cat's offerings to the dirt... But I don't push them to do this!

Yep, my hubby really hears it from me if he forgets to bring his ziplocks and brown bags back home. God forbid it is dollar store tupperware!

Sorry to tell you this but reusing plastic bags shouldn't be done. They are harbingers of bacteria and food safety experts tell you to throw them away and not to use them again.

My own bent is to use every last ounce of what comes in a plastic bottle, such as shampoo, liquid hand soap, etc. So you'll see the nearly empty bottle on my kitchen counter for WEEKS until I think it is sufficiently empty.

Anything that's boarderline stealing... like grabbing 50 ketchup packages when you only intend on using two or picking up a roll of toilet paper on your way out of a public restroom

oh yeah, I hate when people take more than they intend to use of freebies.

My mom always wants to reuse birthday candles too. I think it's so silly. Let the kid have fresh candles on their cake. I bought a box of 38 candles at the $ store. Never mind that I don't want crumbs from the last birthday cake stuck in the new one and you can't exactly wash wax candles in hot water.

We always laugh at my dad because back in the good old days when gas was cheap, he would put in $2 at a time and then put the car into neutral whenever he was going down a hill.

(My husband and I once put $2 of gas in at a time. Our car was in the shop for too long so the mechanics gave us one of their cars, but the tank was on empty. The last thing we wanted to do was fill it up and then get a call that our car was ready. Everyone laughed at us when we paid our $2 until we told the story, then they were sympathetic.)

Oh, I could swear I've seen my stepmother saving used muffin wrappers for the next batch she makes.

Depends on what you used them for and what you reuse them for...

My mom usually has a bag with bread in her freezer. She reuses it. I can't imagine it is a danger. OTOH, I wouldn't think it safe to marinate meat in one and reuse it for fruit salad!

I keep my ziplock baggies from my lunches, but when I re-use them it is on walks with the dog! No worries about germs in those! And I feel it is wasteful to use a "fresh" baggie for that purpose!

Some not-so-over-the-top ways to save money ....

We use grocery store plastic bags for scooping cat boxes.

We use salt to kills snails/slugs (rather than pesticides)

We use lower watt fluorescent bulbs all over the house.

We use cats as our primary method of winter heating, lol!

You know, although I am laughing at most of these posts, I do actually do some! Especially the one about using EVERY LAST DROP of anything that comes in bottles, especially soaps and shampoos. I even rinse them out and pour the last remnant of the shampoo mixed with the pint of hot water it took to release it from the bottle over my head for the "final wash" of that bottle! And I squeeze that toothpaste tube until my fingers hurt to get the last bit out of it. The only problem I have most times though is that I have trouble keeping my toothbrush from tipping over in the process, as it takes two hands to properly get it done!

Oooo, I must have it bad!!!

I don't add water to soap/shampoo bottles: I hate the feel of watery soap. However, if I'm making a milkshake I will add some milk to the end of the chocolate syrup bottle to get the last bit out.

What's "funny" is that here, a lot of elderly will do this at McDonalds in the morning time.

It's wrong but you gotta admit, the little old lady taking a 2 inch pile of napkins is kinda funny (in it's own way)

I do that. I also reuse plastic bags and empty plastic containers for tupperware.

Add water and make it last even longer.

I coast in neutral whenever I can.

Never thought of any of these things as "over the top." Just an overall, thoughtful (as in, putting thought into my actions) way of life.

I guess I don't think those things are over the top, especially birthday candles. Why in the world wouldn't you wash them? They do wash in warm-hot water btw. They never burn more then a millimeter. Toss out one that burns lopsided once and awhile. It just seems silly to spend the $1.48 to get a new pack for every birthday when you don't even use the entire box.

So much of our culture is disposable. Sad. If someone wants to go out of their way to save and reuse I say more power to them, even if its something that I find to be more trouble then its worth.

My dad would add four cans of water for frozen orange juice instead of the stated three. Drove me nuts because it tasted so diluted.

There was also a neighbor that created a trough-like thing to collect every last drop from motor oil bottles. That actually makes some sense.

I do that and don't consider it over the top. Once you're used to it, you don't even know it's diluted. And the way my kids go through juice...

Yuk.. the first one, my mom used to do until she found she was wasting the whole thing because nobody was drinking it anymore.

The motor oil thing... my dad does that. It doesn't take him long to fill up another bottle.

My grandmother used to pick those individual strands of tinsel back off the tree and save them for the next year.

In tough times when I was younger my mother used to water down a gallon of milk.

Blessings,
