Do you do this? Is it wrong?

I shop for my whole family. With two growing boys, it's difficult to go shopping with one size in mind and get that perfect fit. Even for myself. There was a time where I'd open up packages and if what I wanted to buy didn't look like the right fit upon inspection I'd buy a different size(i.e package of socks, t-shirts etc.)and since different brands run different shapes/sizes....... go figure.

Now, I hunt for a package that someone else has opened and those times when I'm not lucky, I've gone home to discover the fit isn't just right . Waste of money.

Why oh why don't stores offer a real display of the items so this won't be neccesary? And what about non-clothes items? Do you open the package? Is it morally wrong? .

Ask a clerk if you can 'see the actual' item. Most times they will or open the packaging themselves. Some stores won't allow that before purchase. Perhaps inconsiderate without asking(would you just open a stranger's refrig. for snack without an offer?)but I don't know about being morally wrong. Stealing the item would be 'morally wrong.'

I work part-time in an upscale dept store and we encourage people to 'open an try' things out. 2/3rds of the store is clothing and its' all out on the floor to try on, but for things in the gifts/home deco depts, we'd rather you check it out and buy it than buy it and bring it back. My suggestion - ask an associate to help - that way, if it IS a big deal, at least 'they' opened it and probably have the means to repack it.

Hmm, I never thought about asking the clerk to open a package. Once a package is opened, then the store usually seals it up with tape and for some reason many humans......don't want to purchase an item that was previously opened.

I think most retailers would appreciate this. When you open them yourselves and then put them back how does another coustomer know that they're all there? If the dept. manager knows then they can repackage it or close it up properly and tag it as is.

This practice doesn't work with milk either......I only brought this up because milk and twinkies go together

You wanna know what my biggest pet peeve is? When I buy a certain merchandise (eg: electronics & hardware) and find out it was previously opened and repackaged.

What about items such as deodorant sticks?
I never know if I'm going to like the fragrance or not so I pull the cap off, sniff and put the cap back on.

Is that wrong?

I do that; I remember once this employee told me not to, but the deodorants have this foil covering over them that I don't take off. I just take off the cap and put the cap back on; I can smell through the foil. I won't open things though...I won't buy something that's opened so I don't do it.

Please don't do it with food, either! I know this isn't what the post is about, but I can't stand it when I see people eating food in the grocery store before it's paid for!

That's funny because I have opened chips and juice for my son while shopping. I simply hand the empty bag/carton to the clerk for scanning. I think that's different .....because I have every intention on paying for any food I've opened.

One of my fondest memories of my mother when I was growing up was going to the grocery store with her. She'd get a box of Snickers (at least I think it was Snickers) and eat most of the box while she was shopping by the time we got to the checker. And of course he'd pay for the box, like truthrevealed.

With socks/underwear ... it's cheap enough. I buy one package of the size I need. IF it's wrong, I get the next size up/down. If it's right, I buy another package.

With things like deodorant, lotion, shampoo, etc ... I don't see the arm as long as any seal isn't broken.

I totally open everything. What worse if if I open it AND i decide I want to buy it I'll put the opened one back on the shelf and purchase an unopened package. I don't know why but I do.

I also have a bad habit of switching the contents of the package. For example, if the pack of panties has two black pair and two pink pair, and I want 4 pair of black then I'll open another pack and exchange. Is that wrong? I do the same thing with, well, everything.

I also tend to sample the lotions. I have no intent to buy them but sometimes my hands get dry from all the shopping and switching of packages so I need to um borrow some. I try not to remove the foil but sometimes the need arises.

Well it may be cheap enough for you but when you are buying for several children and need to make sure of sizes (especially in socks), these things tend to add up pretty fast and being that the closest Walmart is roughly 15 miles away it's not always possible for me to just run back to the store to exchange things.

I'd rather open a package, pull out a sock and eye ball the size and check for rough seams (I have one child with issues with certain kinds of seams) and get the right size, instead of getting home with a package of something that doesn't fit. For me it's a waste of $5 to $10 for the product, a waste of my time as I now have to go back and get a bigger/smaller size and my gas and wear and tear on my van.

Now I don't do this with food or toiletries. I do remove lids to jar type candles and take a sniff before purchasing. I hate bringing home a candle that I thought was going to be just fine just to find out that I can't stand the smell.

Blessings,

Garsy

You're right. It's just me, so it is cheaper. And the Target is 5 min away.

If i were shopping for multiple growing children, I might do that, yeah.

I don't open packages or switch stuff around. I recently bought a package of underwear for my kids that had been previously opened, and it came open again in the cart and the rolls of underwear were falling all over the place. I only found 9 out of 10 pairs at the check-out aisle. It was really annoying.

I think there's nothing wrong with that. I do that with beauty products. For instance when I go shopping at bath & body works if I can't find the tester I will unscrew the body lotion so I can smell the fragrance. I never use it though, I can usually tell just by sniffing if it's a scent I'll like.

Places like Bath and Body Works, The Body Shop, etc. will open a tester for you if there isn't already one open. And you should ask, first, before opening a new one. They have a special way they have to "buy" it to use it as a tester.

Well of course I'd ask first if I were to use it. I just want to smell the scent to see if I like it and IMO there is nothing wrong with opening it to smell it only.
