So the teens were certainly in the wrong for knocking over the man's sign, but did they really deserve to be shot? Story here. And here. Police Report here. And what's with the man's claim that he just fired warning shots? Aren't warning shots generally fired straight up into the air. Not at someone.

So the teens were not arrested for tresspassing? Oh for petes-sake, their van used for stealing was shot. Good. Maybe seeing the holes in the van will teach the hoodlums a lesson, when they see it. If a person wants to shot someone, they usually can, so hey it was a warning to the little criminals.

Actually, the bullet went through the van and hit one of them in the arm. Since shooting someone is a more serious offense the man was the one who was arrested. His court date is set for Election Day. He could probably use the trespassing and vandalism to mitigate the charges somewhat, but the fact remains, he shot a kid for pulling a fairly harmless prank.

Oh, I did not read one was hit, yes it is a little much. The kids need to act better also, but shooting a kid is not good, or anyone unless life is endangered. quote:

He was willing to possibly kill someone over a lawn sign? I've had trash thrown in my yard three times because of my Obama sign (I live in a heavily republican congressional district) but that is not a capital offense either! Maybe if he took the license number of the van and called the police instead of playing Wyatt Earp the kids would be the ones in trouble and not him! Those kids should be sentenced to learn about the election process and freedom of speech. And a couple hundred hours of community service wouldn't hurt either!

Also, didn't have this problem until the yard sign went in. Zero times in 15 years and now three times in the past three weeks? Not all McCain fans are vandalizers but they're not ALL saints either! So stealing a yard sign is a capital offense? He may not have killed anyone but he could have! But a lawn sign is worth so much more than a human life right?

I never said a lawn sign was worth more than a human life. I simply said that if you don't want to get shot entering someone's property unannounced for the purpose of mischeif will not help you achieve that goal. Besides that, no matter how you choose to simplify things, it isn't just about the sign but about that man's property rights.

So it sounds like you're saying here that the man's property rights outweigh the teens' lives. This incident was a 50 year old man who should know better against a couple of kids who still have some growing up to do. I'm not trying to excuse the kids, but the homeowner did not have the right to shoot at them. Self defense only comes into play when your life is in imminent danger. This wasn't the case since they were running away when he started shooting. As for protecting his property, he could've just fired into the air to scare them off. But he chose to try to kill these teens. He's not the one who called the police even after the incident. In fact, the responding officer came out to talk to him shortly after the incident and the man never even mentioned the shooting. When the officer had to come back, he asked why he didn't say he'd fired his rifle. The man's response was, "It never came up." Oh, and...the guy gets the signs for free.

That is bad, and for fellow Republicans I apoligize for these people who disrespected you. I would never steal someones sign, nor hurt anyone for steaaling mine, orbe violent in anyway towards those who suporrt Obama. I thought shooting holes in the van was ok, at first, then I realized one was shot in the arm. I like the political process lesson for the boys. quote:

I would venture to say that the two cousins will not be stealing any yard signs, bicycles, lawn mowers, or cars any time soon.

I'm not trying to excuse the kids, but the homeowner did not have the right to shoot at them. Notice that i never said that he had a right to shoot the kids, i simply stated that if your goal is to not get shot then don't perform mischevious acts on other's property. I wasn't saying that property rights were more important than their lives that is the way you and Map13 decided to spin it. I was simply stating that it wasn't just a matter of a sign, it was a sign on this man's property onto which the teens had to trespass to steal. quote:

Nowhere did i call it self defense so I am not sure where the arguement came from. quote:

There were no charges brought agains these kids! They admitted to stealing private property. They admitted to having done it before. And there were no charges. No.Charges. They.Were.Let.Go. What incentive do they have to straighten up their act? I would rather the home owner have aimed for the tires. Who knows, he may have been and is a bad shot! I hope he gets off, scott-free, and takes some target practice so he can just hit tires next time. This may just embolden these kids so that, next time, they may try to steal something bigger than a sign. Maybe a car. Do you really think their days of committing crimes is over? Again, why should they be?

Oh, I can assure you, if you come onto my property and try to steal ANYTHING, there is a very good chance that you will be shot at. My hat is off to the guy for standing up to the little punks....

Writerchick, I can't believe this is having to be explained to you, but: when someone is breaking into your house or attempting to vandalize or steal your property, it may not be readily apparent that it is a "childish prank". Any homeowner can and should take appropriate steps to defend their family, home, and possessions. The good part of this story is that I am sure these particular kids will never do anything like this again....

One man found a better way to deal with sign vandals: Sign battle starts with a zzzzzzzt! CHAPEL HILL - After Shawn Turschak saw two sets of McCain-Palin signs disappear from his yard within hours of being planted, he took steps to protect the latest pair. On Monday, he ran wires from his house and hooked the signs into a power source for an electric pet fence. Then he mounted a surveillance camera in a nearby tree and wired it to a digital recorder. Tuesday afternoon, the camera saw this: A neighbor trotting up with an Obama-Biden sign, grabbing a handful of volts as he touched a McCain-Palin sign, then fleeing at top 9-year-old boy speed. A few minutes later, the boy's father, Andrew Noble, was at Turschak's door, demanding an explanation from Turschak's 13-year-old daughter, who called her parents on the phone to say a man was yelling at her. Both families agree on one aspect of the exchange, that Noble chastised her for "electrocuting" his son, then left. It comes with a fun video.

It was far enough away from any neutral ground to be have accidentally bumped into and the little darlin' was carrying an 0bama sign.
