Obama rode to victory in part because of the promises he made as a candidate. Below is a partial list:

Obama Promises

1. Give businesses a $3,000 tax credit for each new job created
2. Lower health care premiums by $2,500
3. Post any non-emergency bill on the Internet for five days before signing it to give the public a chance to review and comment.
4. To pass the Freedom of Choice Act.
5. To rescind the Defense of Marriage Act.
6. Repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy
7. Eliminate income taxes on Social Security for seniors making under $50,000"
8. Give homeowners and working parents additional tax breaks
9. Not increase taxes on anyone if they "make under $250,000; you will not see your taxes increase by a single dime –- not your income taxes, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax"
10. Create two million new jobs by rebuilding our crumbling roads, and bridges, and schools -- by laying broadband lines to reach every corner of the country"
11. Invest $15 billion a year in renewable sources of energy to create five million new energy jobs over the next decade"
12. build "a new electricity grid"
13. "Build the fuel efficient cars of tomorrow"
14. "Eliminate the oil we import from the Middle East in 10 years"
15. "If you don't have health insurance, you'll be able to get the same kind of health insurance that members of Congress give themselves";
16. "End discrimination by insurance companies to the sick and those who need care the most"
17. "Pay our teachers higher salaries, give them more support. But ... also demand higher standards and more accountability"
18. "Make a deal with every young person who's here and every young person in America: If you are willing to commit yourself to national service, whether it's serving in our military or in the Peace Corps, working in a veterans home or a homeless shelter, then we will guarantee that you can afford to go to college no ifs ands or buts"
19. "stop spending $10 billion a month in Iraq whole the Iraqis have a huge surplus"
"end this war in Iraq";
20. "Finish the fight and snuff out al Qaeda and bin Laden"
21. Go through the federal budget, line-by-line...end programs that we don't need. Make the ones we do need work better and cost less."

Which one do you expect he will keep?

Which will he renege on?

Which ones does he have to keep to maintain credibility?

Sources here, here, here, and here.

I wholeheartedly didn't believe he had any credibility in the first place. Nonetheless, he already said he would not accomplish this in one term, so that is his "out".

If Obama keeps all his promises, he'll be the first president in U.S. history to ever do so. How many promises did President Bush keep?

Well, I don't have a list of Bush's promises handy; but you are dissembling.

I asked which ones you think he will really keep, not keep, and which ones are neccesary for credibility.

Any opinion, or are you just so disenchanted about Obama already that you don't expect him to keep any?

The only ones I believe will not be a big focus in an Obama administration would be:

4. To pass the Freedom of Choice Act.
5. To rescind the Defense of Marriage Act.
6. Repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy
16. "End discrimination by insurance companies to the sick and those who need care the most" IMO it would take a miracle of God to make this one happen. Insurance companies have strong lobbies.

Everything else IMO is doable in a 4-8 year term (pending any additional national crisis i.e. nuclear attach by Russia)

So really think he can "Eliminate the oil we import from the Middle East in 10 years"?

(albeit that would be two years after he leaves office.)

I'm hoping he WON'T keep the one on taxing the rich making over $250,000 a year. You do know that the rich are the ones who own the large corporations, factories, business, etc and are the pillars holding up the economy, not to mention they keep the economy going by buying and selling things. Once Obama hacks down those pillars, the economy WILL fall. Clinton made the same mistake when he pushed Fannie May to give loans to those who couldn't afford them. Now the ceiling is creaking and soon it will fall. But hey, the people wanted a savior with no holes in his hands and that's what God gave them. A savior with no holes, no holy guidence, just someone screaming change and we can. Enjoy your new holeless savior, folks!! Oh, and you might want to wear a hard hat, at least for a while.

If we focus on building alternative energy sources such as solar, wind turbine, clean coal, start drilling offshore, etc. there's no reason for this to be a reasonable goal. The percentage of oil we import from "the countries that hate us" as McCain said isn't so large that's it's irreplacable if we start now. We've already cut back on our consumption when gas got up to $4.00 a gallon.

Which of these promises can be accomplished by presidential decree?

Those will be the ones that will be kept. The rest depend on congress.

Extremely expensive development and even more expensive to bring to market. Where is the great infusion of capital going to come from in an economy in recession? By definition, there is not money available. But of course, Obama knows that but that did not keep him from pandering.

It's interesting that you posted this. I had been thinking along these same lines earlier in the day. There are many variables involved in accomplishing any of these 100%. Thanks for the list, it will help me put my thoughts together. For now, I'll say keep #4, renege #10, the Middle East is too important in world affairs to not have financial relationships with them and that means importing at least some amount of oil. I'm still thinking on the rest of the list.

Probably the same way McCain was going to build all those new off-shore drilling machines and 40 new nuclear plants.
