Sen. Barack Obama greeting U.S. soldiers

Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama may not have drafted a woman to be his running mate, as his rival John McCain has, but he does believe that America's young women should be eligible for the military draft and possibly combat duty.

"I think that if women are registered for service … I think it will help to send a message to my two daughters that they've got obligations to this great country as well as boys do," said Obama in a debate last year.

Why not? Israel does it, and they're are greatest and most reliable (and only) ally in the Middle East. Their military is a model of efficiency and courage for all other nations.

It's the logical extension of feminism. What I think is ironic is that many of the Dem's I know hat the idea of the draft and are expressing fear that if McCain wins he will reinstitute it. But it's OK if Obama wants it.

Personally, I rather like that we have a volunteer military. And I certainly wouldn't want my daughters drafted.

It seems liberals are fascinated with killing as many of US as possible.

I served in the Army for four years, and I have no problem with either a draft or with women in combat. US forces serve overseas alongside other nations' forces or UN troops, and many of these have women in combat roles, so American soldiers are used to the idea.

I know that some people have an ideological opposition to women in combat, but I'm not one of them. I've just never heard a good reason for it. Some of the best soldiers I've known were women: smart, strong, fast, skilled, and brave.

Greetings

WoW
With Obama big talk about failed policies... here is one coming to light.

Look at it from the main focus of the Democratic agendas’ point of view ... which has been carefully planed out for over 8 years now “including the crisis”….. which some are not paying attention to;

It’s just another deterrent to further destroy the family unit in America,
Think about it…
If they the Democratic Party didn't initiate in the first place the murders of 40-50 million unborn; many would have been coming of age to begin with
....there would be no need to for women to register for the draft;
And as is times past.... many would have just volunteered anyway

I'm a conservative and I think the draft is an excellent idea for both men and women. I don't know when it came to be viewed as a "liberal" idea.

If we are going to have a draft registry then I agree women should also be required to register.

Then you're a neo-conservative because many of us older conservatives are appalled at the idea. Sure they have 'em in Israel, but it's a matter of necessity to have a large enough military. But are we so desperate that we are okay with sending mothers off to war while grandparents or whomever raises the kids? It's bad enough for daddy to go away for a year, but mother too?!?!?

Is he trying to get women to vote for him this way?

Selective service laws can be drafted to exempt the parents of young children.

Don't know about the "neo-conservative" part; I think McCain is a socialist. My grandfather is 103, and he supports drafting women for combat. Then again, he thinks that we should have nuked Teheran in 1979.

In Israel, you automatically serve in the military for three years out of high school, and then you've served your time. That's not the same thing as a draft, because it's not tearing apart families.

Here's an article explaining how it works. LINK

You're right, and this is even better. I'd go for universal conscription of everyone regardless of gender right after high school. Let's do it!

Selective service laws can be drafted to exempt the parents of young children.

You trust the government to do that?

FWIW, the draft during the Viet Nam era originally exempted married men. Then it only exempted married men with children. Finally, marriage had nothing to do with an exemption.

Once the door is opened to drafting women, Congress has free rein to draft without exception for children.

Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to men with children.

And that's the liberal & neocon view: men & women are for all practical purposes the same thing with slightly different reproductive organs...

Of course you can get an exemption as a conscientious objector, and you also do not have to be in a combat position if you'd rather do something else. Both of my parents were in the Air Force before I was born, and they are both Vietnam vets although neither saw combat. My mom was a computer programmer and my dad helped load airplanes.

Again, that's out of necessity, not out of ideology.

What's left out of that equation is that, after 3 years active duty, men serve in the ready reserve until they are 55 years old - and must be able to mobilize within 48 hours of a national crisis. That means they are essentially wedded to the military for most of their productive working years.

How appealing does that sound to you?

Exactly. As the article I linked to states,
quote:

While there are many ways to serve in the Israeli army, it is vital that everyone who can serve, does. Nir said, "It's not like here (in America). You have the army just in case and (for) helping other countries in the world. In Israel, it's the army that keeps Israel."

and

quote:

These youths feel that the army is vital to the preservation of Israel. "Israel is the only country in the world that can't afford losing in a battle, and maybe in a war. Because of its size and the world we live in, we can't afford losing even one time because we're gonna get a second Holocaust, and there won't be any Jewish people," Sagi said.

Is that just the men?

Well, we wouldn't have to follow Israel or any country's model. We would create draft policies that work for us. I just don't see what's wrong with drafting women for combat. I don't see where it's a "neo-con" view of reproductive organs, as an earlier poster said.

And the liberal push for a draft is just a cheap, bogus political ploy. Liberals don't actually want a draft; most of them don't even want a military at all. Obama is playing a political game rather than stating what he actually believes.

I think the ones we already have work just fine.

God never forced women to enroll in the army. It was only men. I trust what God did and believe there are reasons far greater than may of us may suspect for God keeping women out of His military.

Liberals don't actually want a draft; most of them don't even want a military at all.

So you admit liberals are bent on destroying our country by taking away it's primary means of defence?

I've got a great idea. Let's send the weakest, shortest, lightest and slowest to combat. It's a great idea if you want to increase the death rate of women. They will be wounded in greater numbers, killed more often than men, and kill the enemy less often. And when they're captured, they will be raped. What a barbaric idea.

I didn't read where they would be sending mothers off to war. How did you come to that conclusion? Personally, I would draft prisoners before I would draft women. I couldn't fathom the idea of my daughter being called to service while some knucklehead sits in prison getting 3 meals per day and recreation time.
