Do you believe that numbers have any significance in the Bible? e.g. the number 10 is believed to represent testing, e.g. tithing, ten commandments, etc

What do you think?

Also, do you believe we can read too much into such?

Usually people read into that way too much IMHO.

Numbers can mean something, but that doesn't mean that every time a number is brought up it's significant. Sometimes it's just a number.

Yes, I do. As you have stated, the number 10. 7=completion, 8=new beginning...and there are many more...I would have to look them up.

You mean like Numbers 11:29 But Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord's people were prophets and that "the Lord" would put his Spirit on them!"

Yes, numerology is a huge part of scripture, and there are many numbers with different meanings. By studying the numerology in the bible, it can help you to understand scripture and especially prophecy better.

Yep - I do believe there are situations in the Bible where numbers can have spritual significance however, as armydude has mentioned - we need to be careful because there is a danger that we could read too much significance into numbers and end up looking for the significance in all the numbers mentioned in the Bible which would not be helpful towards true interpretation either. Basically, sometimes there will be significance but not always.

chapter and verse numbers are a rather recent innovation, for example.

NO

The only numbers that matter are subjective in the following;

(Mat 7:14) Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

and

(Mat 7:22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

(Mat 7:23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

These are the subjective numbers that ought to frighten folks into;

(2Co 13:5) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Thanks
RC

Several years ago, Adrian Rogers did a series (?) about numbers and their Biblical significance. The way he explained it, it made a lot of sense. I'll try to find it and link to it.

I am sure that there is a significance to the meanings of numbers in the bible, and I am also sure that God has not completely revealed it to me.
I am also sure that it would be very arrogant for me to say that since I don't see it clearly that numbers cannot have a significance.

Unveiling the End Times in Our Time - Adrian Rogers
This book is his interpretation of the book of Revelation. It's very good and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the end times prophesies.

Yes.

Why is it written time and time again about 40days and 40nights? 40years. 7days. 2years. 12's ect. God obviously uses time which is measured by numbers to represent certain things.

Thanks Dave. I do like the late Dr Adrian Rogers - he is Biblically sound as a pound (or should I say sound as 1 pound?!!) I do believe there is certain significance regarding numbers and prophecy (and the book you mention does sound interesting).

A balanced view is required if we are to study such and we also need to be careful not to read anything into God's Word which is not intended by the Lord also. Discernment is useful.

Here is what Dr. Adrian Rogers said about numbers in his book "Unveiling The End Times In Our Time."

#1: Unity, God
#2: Witnesses - always a second person to bear witness.
#3: The divine number of God, His Tri-unity, Father, Son & Holy Spirit
#4: The earth number - four seasons, four corners of the earth, four angels, beasts and living creatures in Revelation
#5 & 10: Our five senses, five fingers & toes, 10 - Completeness: The Ten Commandments, ten horns of the anti-christ, ten plagues of Egypt
#6: Number of man, man created on the 6th day, the beast is identified as 666
#7: Perfection.
#8: New beginnings - circumcision on the 8th day, Leper deemed fully cured on the 8th day, 8th day begins a new week
#12: Multiply 3 (the Divine Number) by 4 (the earth number) and you get twelve - God reigning over the earth, 12 patriarchs in the Old Testament, 12 Apostles, 12 tribes of Israel, etc.

Really have to read the book to fully appreciate this part. It's a great read!

The numbers listed above may or may not have significance depending on the passage. I do know that 40 seems to be the standard number for judgement and testing: 40 lashes of the whip, 40 years in the wilderness, 40 days and nights of rain to flood the earth, length of fasts by Moses and Jesus......

But of more significance (and even apparently used by NT authors) was the numeric value of the Hebrew letters, called gematria. Paul and Mark (in his gospel) pull together seemingly disparate OT passages that have words linked by gematria. In Revelation, John seems to use it to give us the infamous "666."

Please refer to Psalm 119 for the 22 letter names in order of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet

Aleph thru Yud give us 1-10 respectively by ones
Kaph thru Koof give us 20-100 respectively by tens
Resh, Shin and Tav give us 200, 300 and 400 respectively

I don't have the book with me at this time, but I do know that Rogers would multiply numbers to arrive at other numbers, such as 10 X 4 = 40 or 5 X 8 = 40, so it's possible that he did such to get the number 40. I don't claim to have even a tenth the knowledge of Dr. Rogers, so I'm only guessing at the combination.

And I hope and pray your life remains that way. But remember, it's the fire that tempers the steel. We need to be tested by some trials to prove our mettle, also.
