HERE is the story. A New York shopping center uses humiliation to deter shoplifters. What do you think about it?

It works for me! Too long, we've been coddling criminals. Maybe humiliation will work.

I think it is worth trying. Although, I wonder the extent to which it would be a true deterrent. Some hard core criminals are far removed from reality.

I was always a big proponent of caning and public stockades. This is a good start, maybe it is a good step towards corporal punishment.

That's true. Maybe if they get a caption above their head. "This person stole from _____."

HAHA!! That's funny! During my shoplifting days I really had no shame whatsoever so having my photo posted would not have made me not do it. As long as the photo was nice...

You do realize that in pretty much every state in the union, stores have the right to turn a customer away. And if they saw your picture up there they very easily could. I guess it doesn't matter if you don't want to ever go into that store again...

Rami is right they have no shame. Cut off a finger or two and if they continue maybe hand. Pain is often a great deterent to crime.

True, but we have that whole, "punishment must fit the crime" thing, which the ACLU apparently takes to mean that we have to put criminals in the lap of luxury... Sorry... was that a rant?

Absolutly not! The Aclu brings continuous comments of aggrevation outta me all the time. One time a mistake ok. But continual breaking of the law needs some serious punishment of some sort. Armydude how you doing? Haven't spoken in a while.

It's been a while hasn't it? I agree with you. We've got too many career criminals, and there has to be a deterrent of some sort. As for the rest, I'll meet you in the Geezer thread so we don't take this one off track.

Ok, true story time and this isn't something I'm proud of but it fits in with the OP. I was in a sex shop (Porn, toys, etc.) in Florida about 11 or 12 years ago and it was two stories. Whenever someone would get caught shoplifting they would get their picture taken and posted on the wall with who they were, how they got caught and what they got caught with. From those pictures you'd have never seen a more pathetic group of guys who were upset that they got caught. Some of the captions and such were downright hysterical. They often had to pose with what it was they got caught with. I'm sure the concept in other places of considerably more repute would work also. It would also alert employees on who to watch out for. What would really be cool is to take their pictures and if they get convicted to post them on the internet. ; )

I'm afraid there is very little that works as deterrent anymore. We could go to extreme measures like many of the muslim countries do. But, that's not likely to deter crime either. The one thing that works better than anything else is strong family connection. When someone knows they will be letting down the family if they get caught, there is a strong deterrent factor. But, as reverance for family has broken down, so has respect for self and anyone who gets in the way of self.

I doubt it will stop those who steal for a living, but it might deter more teens/young adults than you think. It would have with me anyway.

Can't, as doing so would damage the individual's self-esteem. Remember the Safe Child movement says a child should never, ever, be spanked. This is the logical outcome of Dr. Spock's teachings. In addition to posting the offenders photo, make them work off the crime by cleaning the store's bathrooms.

It used to be very common in my city for stores/restaurants to post the names of people who wrote bad checks. Then one of the bad check writers complained that it was too embarassing and now a city ordinance prevents them from doing that.

Makes no sense. We don't have a right not to be embarrassed...

Somebody tried that here and the judge threw it out as a frivolous lawsuit. The city council has refused to even consider such ordinance requests- our council is very pro-business. There are some stores who ban customers who write bad checks, shoplift, or are caught trying to defraud the store (like trying to return possibly stolen merchandise for a cash return) from returning to the store for varying periods ranging from a year to forever.
