I need firewire for video capture at work, but we don't have a single computer with a port for that. Do we have any options short of installing a card? (If we buy a card, we have to do it through an IT department and give up a machine until they can install it.)

You might try a combo hub like this one, but I would expect reduced performance going from Firewire to USB.

I'm glad you posted that. I looked for something similar and couldn't find anything. How much reduced performance do you think there might be? I'm generally working with chunks of video that are shorter than 15 minutes.

By most benchmarks, the USB 2.0 interface is *roughly* 1/3 slower than the Firewire interface. With that said, that is only roughly, benchmarks can be skewed back and forth.
And for some reason, when I tried to look up some benchmarks, there was one identical web page frame that kept showing up on about 8 different web sites, claiming that Firewire was over twice as fast as USB 2.0. So apparently there was either "re-use" or someone was stacking the deck in favor of Firewire reputation.
Still, Firewire is indeed faster, but you probably should see little differences in normal video capture.

Thanks! This might work for us. I'll have to show it to my boss. I think it's inexpensive enough that even if it didn't work out, she wouldn't be too upset.

It won't work, because it won't convert from one to the other. It's a firewire hub, and a USB hub in the same box, but there is no conversion between the two. There are many such combination devices, but they won't do what you want them to.
As far as I know, there is no device that can connect all firewire devices to a USB port. However, I did find this: Pixela 1394 to USB 2.0 Capture Cable. However, I don't think this cable actually imports the DV video files directly off of the camera, but actually converts the video into another format (MPEG 1 or 2). I don't know much about video work, so I'm not clear on how it's supposed to work. That, and I'm not sure where to buy one, or how much it would cost (a 2004 article on Gizmodo says $85, a lot more than a firewire PCI card).

Okay, then we have more to talk about. I guess I need to see how long IT would have a box out of service to put a card in. Converting to another format is negligible. Right now, every time I shoot video I have to take the camera to my house and capture the video via firewire into my own computer and then figure a way to get it back to work. (I've done that several different ways.) It's a huge pain and I'm tired of it.

Ok maybe this is a dumb question but do you have any laptops at your work? If you do you could use a FireWire PCMCIA card.

Honestly, it shouldn't take but a couple of minutes to install a firewire card. That would probably be your most reliable route.
