A car that is big enough not to swallow and that makes noise..not so much noise that it irritates the parents.

Oh come on! The louder the better and hopefully you won't get the same toy back when you have a child!

Other ideas -

Blocks - wooden, plastic, cloth, it really doesn't matter - blocks are always fun.

Anything that makes noise!

Bigger push or riding toys

Books - board or cloth books - My favorite is Hug by Jez Alborough or anything by Sandra Boyton

Blessings,

Garsy

Yep, aunties should always get their nephews the loudest, most obnoxious toy ever. LOL, well, OK, maybe the not the worst. But, yeah, I nice big car or truck that says 12+ months.

Whatever you do get, just make sure it says it's for 12+ months, or if it says 18+ months, just make sure there aren't any small parts on it. You know what is really good for babies that age, a thing where you put the shapes in the hole. My kids have one that looks like a hippo and has four shapes that go in corresponding holes, then they smack down this button and all the shapes spin around in the hippo's belly and the shapes come out of its mouth.

I think the Bounce & Spin Zebra is for 12+ months. The Tickle Me Elmo or Hokey Pokey Elmo is pretty popular too, and you should be able to find one since it's not very close to Christmas. Just make sure to listen to all the talking toys to make sure they don't say "Islam is the light" or "Satan is king". LOL

Actually noisy toys are the grandma's job. Aunties need to be careful because when they have kids the favor just may be returned.

ETA: and remember any time the kid comes to visit Auntie mom and dad will send noisy toy for kid to play with at her house.

Agreed! My friend, who is Auntie to my daughter, bought her very loud piano that drives me crazy sometime. I said to my friend "you really haven't thought this through have you? You know that I'll just turn around and do you one better when you have kids." (I'm thinking drum set.)

I'm a big fan of buying books for kids (when people ask what to buy for dd, we always say books.)

Also, I'm not sure what you are looking to spend, but we bought the very affordable easel from Ikea that my daughter loves. You could buy an easel, crayons, paints, etc for your nephew.

I know you said you wanted to get him something special but honestly at just one he won't remember the gift or understand any of it anyway. Have you thought about opening up a savings account or college fund for him?

I like those sets with the twisted wires and the beads kids can thread along them. I have yet to meet a 1 year old who can resist. They also can't unthread the beads so it's very safe.

Fuzzy animal pillows are fun.

Anything you can put balls into. There's a few toys like this. One looks like an aquarium and rocks back and forth. You put the balls in the top. Some others have tubes where the balls run down and come out holes in the bottom.

All of those are big hits.

Ah except when you are the eldest Auntie and there is no more chance of you having anymore children!

He hehehehe!

No I understand the fact that toys can come back to haunt you! There was one toy, a noisy little toy guitar, that I bought for my brother's eldest child when she was a year old. I got it back a couple years later when my ds was born. My brother got it back 9 months later when he had his son and then I got it back when my eldest dd was born. I returned it 3 months later when his baby was born. Then I got it back for a time then my brother and I both presented it to my youngest sister when she had her eldest child. It hasn't left that house! When it was at my house I let the kids play with it for a week or so then I took it and put it away for the remainder of the time it was with us!

Do I dare mention BOOKS again?

Blessings,

Garsy

Oh yeah! For my youngest's first birthday we got him THIS. It pops the balls up, and they usually fall outside the bowl, so then the baby has to get up and go get the ball and put it back. Good exercise for baby, and they have so much fun with it. Both my boys really like this toy.

Nathan loves that toy, mainly because his cousins have it, so it's an uncommon treat. It does play annoying carnival music that I know my sister in law got real tired of, really quick.

Yep, it does play annoying carnival music. Jimmy has had the toy for 4 months now, and he doesn't get sick of it. He plays with it at least twice a day.

That is my two little ones FAVORITE toy. Luke's almost 2 1/2 and still loves to play with it. I recommend that to anyone looking for a good 1st b-day gift.

We gave a membership to our local Children's museum, it had a great area for little people. It lasted all year and gave my SIL and niece a fun place to visit on rainy days.

A zoo membership for him and his family would be a great gift too!
