I quite think my mouse has finally had all the torture it can withstand. I've been using the same mouse that was purchased with the computer, this was over five years ago. It's clean and all, it's just become stubborn and will barely move despite what direction I tug in.

So... it looks like for the first time ever, I'm going shopping for a mouse. Yes! This is where you come in.

What are some relatively cheap computer mouses that will last for quite sometime (preferably as long as my current one did), and that's good to excellent quality?

Have you tried opening the panel on the bottom and cleaning out any dirt that's accumulated around the ball and on the rollers inside?

I've got a Fellowes mouse that's probably at least 10 years old that I still use every day.

any optical usb mouse will do, there is no real need to get an expensive one and they sell them everywhere now.

Yes, it's cleaned quite often.

As was mentioned above, get one without a ball on the bottom, doesn't really matter if it's LED or laser. What matters is try a bunch out before you buy and see which is more comfortable to you. I'm especially fussy about the feel of the click buttons, and strongly prefer the slanted ergonomic shape such as on some Logitech models that put the palm at a more natural angle. I have a wireless Logitech like that at home, with a bunch of extra buttons that do come in handy such as for going back and forth between web pages. I use two AA batteries in it that I have to recharge every few weeks. Much better than the standard mouse I use at work.

Any wired mouse will do.

Wired mice these days are generally quite good in quality regardless of brand. If you intend going wireless, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES buy a yumcha (cheap, not well known) branded wireless mouse! They are not worth the money paid for them.

Logitech mice are generally very good. The wired Microsoft ones aren't too bad either. Wired variants of either brand should be able to be had for less than $30 and will serve you quite well.

So you answered the question I was going to ask today---the official plural of computer mouse. That came up at work yesterday and neither 'mice' nor 'mouses' sounds right.

This is a long shot, but if your mouse is a wireless mouse, did you try changing the batteries?

I used to think this was true, until I actually tried some of the cheaper optical mice. For those of us running high resolution screens (I'm at 1600x1200. That's a 20" LCD) and those who play action games, not just any mouse will do. When I was using a $13 Logitech mouse, and had the sensitivity turned up enough that I didn't have to make huge arm movements to get across the screen, I wasn't able to mouse very precisely. The mouse would jump 3 or four pixels at a time for small movements, while still just barely making it across the screen in my normal range of motion.

If you have a large monitor, or if you are a serious gamer, then I highly recommend getting a mouse with a higher scanning resolution. This doesn't mean you have to get an expensive mouse, but don't assume that all optical are made equal.

I would tell you, but I won't, until all of you admit that the proper plural of a computer mouse is "mousies."

What are your current needs for the mouse?

Example: Heavy computer gaming, Internet surfing...etc

I use a Microsloth/soft Wireless IntelliMouse. It has thumb buttons for programing and I use it in gaming as well as surfing to page forward and page back.

I have had the mouse for about 5 years now and it is an Optical mouse, running like New as long as I keep the batteries changed out <smile>.

God Bless!!!!!

I recently bought a nice laser mouse, and I just don't think I could ever go back.

My rule is never pay full price and always try to stay at $20.00 and always Logitech. Check the weekly flyers and you will find one on sale which will serve your needs.

Nope. My Logitech G5 (which fluffmonkey also has) has a wire. A lot of gaming mice are wired, since wireless still holds a stigma from when wireless was buggy and you really didn't want to be using wireless for gaming.

I work at 2 different sites. Both had "dell" optical mice, one from microsith and the other from Logitech. The Logitech works fine but I had the it people change out the microsith one for a ball and roller type as it was flakier than a box of raisin bran.
