http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,455945,00.html While this story is troubling in itself, this part really bothers me: quote:
Bloggers then spent the next 12 hours trying to figure out whether to call authorities, Crane said. Biggs was dead when Pembroke Pines police officers arrived at about 3:30 p.m. "Throughout the day, the bloggers were going back and forth: 'He doesn’t look like he’s breathing'; 'Should we call the police?'; 'Well, where is he?'; 'We don’t know,'" Crane said. "Finally, somebody notified a monitor, who got his information from the sign-up, and then they contacted the local authorities." A spokesman for the Pembroke Pines police department declined to comment on the case, citing department policy on suicides. But he acknowledged that an investigation into the delay in notifying authorities was "possible." I hope that doesn't imply that the people viewing this young man's blog could possibly held responsible for not calling police sooner.

We need more details of course, but the way it's written doesn't lead me to believe any of his fellow bloggers knew him personally. If someone did, that's different, but I don't think strangers should be held responsible.

I personally know someone who posted that he had was considering suicide. He posted a little while later that he had just taken the entire bottle of pills from his doctor. A close friend out of town called 911 who immediately transferred him to the local 911 dispatcher, and the police where at his house in a matter of minutes, knocking down the front door, with an ambulance only a moment behind. He was already passed out and the paramedics were able to pump his stomach and saved his life. This young man happened to be taking medications, which doctors *conveniently* forget to tell patients have a side effect of causing hallucinations. quote:
Bloggers then spent the next 12 hours trying to figure out whether to call authorities This is completely unacceptable and tells me how uncaring our society can be. It's really sick! It only takes a few minutes to call 911 ... people need to accept responsibility if they see something like this going on. I hope they do press charges.

If you saw someone choking in a restaurant and you knew how to perform CPR, would you not do so because you didn't know the person personally?

They apparently didn't know where he was. This isn't about helping someone in your general vicinity; this is about helping a stranger online.

It should at least result in a thorough investigation. If you're witnessing an emergency, particularly one like this that could very reasonably result in death, you'd have to be callous almost to the point of sociopathic behavior to just sit and watch to see what happens without doing SOMETHING. Yes, it gets hard to do something - sometimes very hard - if what you're watching is online, but that still doesn't absolve people for sitting and watching as if this were just some really sick entertainment. Notify the monitor if it's a private board/chat, notify the ISP if you can find their IP, call them if you know them, call their police deparment if you know what they claim as their name and city - but whatever you do, don't just sit and watch. The watchers need help at least as much as the now did one did.

I hope that doesn't imply that the people viewing this young man's blog could possibly held responsible for not calling police sooner. People were egging him on because they didn't know if he was playing and probably because they were young teenagers who think that life is a joke. If you want to read the unfiltered story (not cleaned up on the news) go here but I warn that you will read how heartless these people are: LINK They MAY be able to be held responsible because right now a cyber-bulllying case is in court about the woman who made a fake boy's profile on Myspace and a girl committed suicide because that "boy" made her feel bad: quote:
Mom: MySpace Hoax Led to Daughter's Suicide Megan Meier thought she had made a new friend in cyberspace when a cute teenage boy named Josh contacted her on MySpace and began exchanging messages with her. Megan, a 13-year-old who suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder, corresponded with Josh for more than a month before he abruptly ended their friendship, telling her he had heard she was cruel. The next day Megan committed suicide. Her family learned later that Josh never actually existed; he was created by members of a neighborhood family that included a former friend of Megan's. I'm glad you posted those links as they give a better picture of what happened. 1) This isn't the same thing as the Myspace case because that mom was deliberately seeking out one person to bully. 2) I agree there are some truly idiotic and uncaring people all over the place. quote:
- CandyJunkie creates thread telling Misc. he'll overdose himself again on drugs live on Justin.tv - CandyJunkie posts the amount of drugs he's going to take - Mods don't take it seriously because of his past trolling So had this guy done something similar in the past? I do have trouble with anyone who actually encouraged him to commit suicide. The part I find most disturbing about the whole thing is that when people finally began calling the authorities, they didn't believe them. It appears nearly a dozen people called the police before they acted.
