Hello.. I'm new to home schooling and would like to know everyone's opinion on a good program for my 1st grader? I've considered Sonlight, Heart of Dakota, My Fathers World.. has anyone used any of these programs? Any other good ones out there?

I didn't use a program for that early, but did specifically use a math and reader program. We used (and still use) Math-U-See.
Keep these things in mind:
- There is no perfect curriculum.
- There may be several programs that would work great for you. Don't sweat too much over deciding.
- A program that works great for one family may not be the best for everyone.
If you keep these things in mind, it will help you to make a decision without stressing over it so much. Choose what you feel comfortable with and go from there.
This is not to say that getting opions from others isn't a good idea. It's fine. Just filter them through the idea of deciding what you like best about each, rather than trying to find "the right" or "the best" program. There are many excellent programs out there.

My dd is in 1st gr. I don't use a curriculum with her. Like Cynthia, I use a reading program and a Math book. I know Science and History will get repeated year after year, so I don't really worry so much about it. We did read through an A Beka Science book, she loved it, but it was short and we finished it in a couple of weeks. I also have a Christian Liberty Press History book.... but haven't touched it yet. I want to get her reading well before I work on other things.

Ditto the above, except I pieced together my phonics and math as well.
There's a lot you can do for history, science, and health by making a list of topics or goals and then library-shopping for books to go along with them. The important thing is to keep it short and sweet, keep interest up, and then go do something to reinforce what they learned.

We used a math workbook, then the library for every thing else. Even with math, we ended up playing more games with ds4 as he was never into the paper-n-pencil thing.

We use bits and pieces of the Christian Light Educators program. The organization is founded by Mennonites, so some of the materials seem a bit old fashioned to many, but I like it. We use the reading (phonics based), Math, and Language Arts (supports reading, but concentrates more on writing, penmanship, etc). They have complete curricula and you can purchase all the materials needed. The instructors manuals have very detailed instructions. The prices are really good--I was surprised at how low cost they were. The only complaint that I have is that some of the lessons seem to have a lot of "busy work" associated with them...but there is no reason you cannot skip this as you go if you want.
My mother who is a former school teacher was all worried about my son still working on getting through his first grade reading curriculum this past spring...until she saw what he was doing (and figured out she thought he was a year older than he is), and she said that the material is more advanced than any first grade curriculum she ever saw. I compared his second grade math with a "comprehensive" third grade math curriculum from another source, and the cover almost all the same material.

I am planning on using Sonlight next year for dd. Right now I am only supplementing k for her. We are using Horizons Math 1 and Horizons Phonics k for her. I love the Horizons books. I plan on using them next year for her too. I am not sure I am convinced about the la for Sonlight but I will probably just use bits of it and supplement with Horizons. I know a bunch of people who have used Sonlight and it seems to work really well. The one thing you do need to remember with it is that you do not need to do everything. It can be overwhelming to some people because they do provide so much.
